A change for the better.

I do truly believe in Feng Shui. I believe you need harmony for happiness, wealth, and to prosper. I never knew how to start though. This book has really gave me some great ideas about how to get started getting my life on the right track by using feng shui. I already started trying to rearrange my living room the get a positive flow. It will take time and practice but if you use the advice in this book you will be able to master feng shui and bring some peace and harmony into your life. I believe it also brings beauty and light into your life also. I received this book at a discount for an honest review. I recommend it for anyone needing a change for the better in there life.

Not worth the effort

Am I missing something?!? I see many great reviews for this book and it's the most useless Feng Shui book I've ever read. And I could only manage half way through! Anyone who has studied Feng Shui for more than a few years will not be impressed. If you're interested in learning Eight Directions School (which this is) there are much better volumes to choose.
My copy was so badly written, obviously it was never proofed before printing. And where are the credentials? Anyone who thinks they're expert enough to write a book should be willing to put in some background information. Yes, there are some basic tips (some of which are incorrect) but there's not enough detailed info. Why tell the reader they need to know their personal element, auspicious directions and kua number and then not tell them how to do that? At least add a birthdate chart in the appendix so the reader doesn't have to search out additional sources.
This is the only item I've ever had to return to Amazon. There are over fifty Feng Shui volumes on my bookshelf,and I didn't care to add this one to the collection. Again, if you're just investigating Feng Shui, this may be a valid purchase, but not really worth the money!!!

I frequently find myself revisiting sections of this book time and time again.

One of the very first books I purchased upon pursuing a career in the design field. Mike Stevens' principles on layout process are timeless and you will see this once you read through this book. I frequently find myself revisiting sections of this book time and time again and I have owned it for about 10 years. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get into doing graphic design / layouts / signs etc.

If you design signs read this book once a year

As a 40-year veteran in the sign industry, I divide my career into Before Mike Stevens and After Mike Stevens. No other book has made the impact on my design skills as this one has. The writing is clear and unpretentious, and makes clear that good layout can be learned. Though Mike Stevens lived and worked in an era that is almost forgotten, when the main tool of the sign maker was a lettering brush, the principles he explained and illustrated are timeless. If I were allowed only one book in my library, it would be this one.

Mike Stevens was a Master

I will not reiterate what has already said about this book other than to say it is the best guide available for the lettering artist and when I was a professional sign painter/lettering artist I had no more valued possession. I lent it out frequently to other friends in the trade and its contents were much discussed and marveled at.

I would like to comment on the fact that Mike Stevens did publish a couple of items now unavailable as far as I can tell, that would have supplemented "Mastering Layout" beautifully. One was a book, whose name escapes me, of his showcards in GLORIOUS color. The other was a video, filmed in the 80's, of Mike demonstrating his brush lettering technique. i never saw this, but it was legendary among lettering artists and I flog myself mentally when i realize that it may not be re-issued on DVD.

A Thorough Pleasure

This collection of short stories showcases Ursula Le Guin's absolute mastery of her craft. Of course, in any collection of stories, one will have favorites. The nice thing about this collection is the lesser stories are generally so, not because they are poor, but because they seem a bit incomplete; one wants more, to read more, to explore more, to roll the ideas and the settings around in one's mind.

My favorite story is the first. 'Semley's Necklace' is a touching tale of a sweet young woman, a bit naive, whose misunderstanding alters lives permanently.

Another favorite, though one very unsettling- 'The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas'. Omelas is a wonderful town, where everyone is happy, content, the weather is pleasant. But there is a price to all good things. A terrible price, and one that not all are willing to pay.

OK, a third good one: 'The Rule of Names' is set in Earthsea, a trilogy (later expanded) where wizards exist, and go to school to hone their craft (sound like Harry Potter? Only 20 years earlier!)

Highly recommended. Enjoy!

This book is a jewel!
Forever i have been interested in the common areas of Tao and Yoga, trying to understand who passed which tradition to who.
I usually underline and subsequently read a shrunk version of pretty much any book.. this one? EVERY SINGLE PARAGRAPH is crucial, hence i have not underlined one single concept, because i will be reading this again and again from time to time.
The author has a clear understanding of the history of these traditions, that in my eyes are some of the most interesting legacy from the past. China and India have a lot of common roots, as effortlessly exposed in this masterfully written book. Easy to comprehend by anyone with basic knowledge on the subject.

About the Author
Donald C. Mosley was Professor Emeritus of Management at the University of South Alabama and also the founder and chairman of the Synergistic Consulting Group. Earlier in his career, Dr. Mosley served as Chair of the Management Department at Mississippi State University and as a visiting professor at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand (where he helped to develop the first M.B.A. degree program in New Zealand). In 1973 he became Dean of the College of Business at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, where he helped the College become accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business. In 1983, he returned to teaching, research, and consulting; and in 1999 he received the University of South Alabama Alumni Association's Outstanding Professor award and was mentioned in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Donald C. Mosley, Jr. is an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of South Alabama where he teaches Management Theory and Practice, Organizational Behavior, and Management Seminar. He received his Ph.D. in Business Administration from Mississippi State University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Millsaps College and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of South Alabama. He has conducted research in the areas of recruiting, selection, conflict management, teamwork, leadership, and partnering. As a consultant, he has been instrumental in working with organizations in the public and private sectors to implement organizational development techniques and supervisory training programs. Dr. Mosley is a member of the Academy of Management Association and the Southern Management Association.

Paul Pietri is Professor of Management at the University of South Alabama; in 1993, the Alumni Association selected him for their Outstanding Professor award. Dr. Pietri has an extensive background as a trainer/consultant to private and public sector organizations, both in North America and abroad. He has designed, administered, and conducted training at the supervisory level for organizations in thirty-five states and Canada. These include International Paper Company, Shell, Dupont, the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Labor, and Defense, and others. He also helped design curriculum for the "Supervisory Communication" segment of Mississippi Public Television's series "Effective Communication". His writings have reflected his training and design experiences, and appeared in such journals as Training, Organizational Development Journal, Industrial Management, and others.

easy read and very helpfull

This book is easy to follow and an easy read. I really enjoyed the book and found a lot of great little nuggets of wisdom in it. As I read through I stopped many times just to think how various details about certain topics have applied in my own work life and just laughed at my pervious bosses and my self. I think this book would make anybody a better manager know matter how or how bad they might be. The only downside to this book is that it seems to be written for high school kids. This is ironic as they would be able to read the book but in most case a doubt they could relate to it or even truly appreciate what the authors have to offer in experience and knowledge.

Kindle edition missing content

While the Kindle edition is mostly usable, be aware there are numerous sections with large grey boxes with "Text not available due to copyright restrictions" throughout the book. It has not been an issue until now since I need to review the case study on page 473 and it is unavailable. I will not buy another textbook electronically because of this. While the convenience of always having the book with me on the iPad is great, the missing sections are causing real problems. It also seems strange that Amazon would sell an incomplete book. I also tried downloading the electronic version to the Kindle app on my MacBook but the same sections are blanked out there too.

The Kindle e-book version is missing content on pages 75, 153, 154, 190, 233, 253, 473. I needed the case study from page 473 for an assignment. The publisher told me I was screwed because of this statment in Amazon's description;

Educational and Fun - Best Quick Read for Every College Student

I use San Bolkan's book, So You Are Going to College, for all of my college courses. It creates a great fun and fast supplemental reading that the students can relate to and it is a way for them to learn important lessons. I have had students scoff on the first day when I tell them about one more book they have to buy (& read)--but when I tell them I will buy it from them if they don't like the book they are floored...and I have yet to have to write any checks to back up my guarantee. :) Bottom line, I have assigned this book to over 500 college students, given it to family friends graduating from high school, and read it numerous times myself for class discussion. It only gets positive reviews and it always leaves the reader wanting more of San Bolkan's writing.

There are TONS of books out there which aim to inform collegians about, "how to help themselves," or "do school the right way," but let's face it...most of those are BORING.... THIS ONE is NOT.. its quite the opposite.

Fixing glitches

Halfway through my review of this lovely collection of the artworks of the Endeavour voyage, I was booted off the site so it was unfinished. What I wanted to say is that the great bonus for me was the complete and wonderful reproduction of the artwork of Tupaia (The artist of the Chief Mourner), which was of great use to me in researching and writing my biography of this amazing Tahitian. Unfortunately the digital edition of Tupaia, the remarkable story of Captain Cook's Polynesian navigator is unillustrated (publisher decision, not mine), but his evocative work can be admired here, as well as. In the print edition of his biography. This ably edited, beautifully produced volume is highly recommended.
