Heartbreak Hotel: An Alex Delaware Novel, by Jonathan Kellerman

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Alex Delaware and LAPD detective Milo Sturgis investigate the death of Alex’s most mysterious patient to date in the sensational new thriller from the master of suspense, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Kellerman.

At nearly one hundred years old, Thalia Mars is a far cry from the patients that child psychologist Alex Delaware normally treats. But the charming, witty woman convinces Alex to meet with her in a suite at the Aventura, a luxury hotel with a checkered history.

What Thalia wants from Alex are answers to unsettling questions—about guilt, patterns of criminal behavior, victim selection. When Alex asks the reason for her morbid fascination, Thalia promises to tell all during their next session. But when he shows up the following morning, he is met with silence: Thalia is dead in her room.

When questions arise about how Thalia perished, Alex and homicide detective Milo Sturgis must peel back the layers of a fascinating but elusive woman’s life and embark on one of the most baffling investigations either of them has ever experienced. For Thalia Mars is a victim like no other, an enigma who harbored nearly a century of secrets and whose life and death draw those around her into a vortex of violence.

Heartbreak Hotel is classic Delaware and classic Kellerman.

CHAPTER

1

I lead a double life.

Some of my time is spent using the doctorate I earned: evaluating the mental health of injured, neglected, or traumatized children, making recommendations about parental custody, providing short-term treatment. My own childhood was often nightmarish and I like to think I’m making a difference. I keep my fees reasonable and bills get paid.

Then there’s the other stuff, initiated by my best friend, an LAPD homicide lieutenant. Once in a while my name leaks into a news story. Mostly I keep out of public view. I doubt any of the families I see are aware of the murders I work on. They’ve never commented on it and I think they would if they knew.

When my invoices finally make their way through the LAPD bureaucracy, I may get paid at an hourly rate far below my office fee. Sometimes those bills are ignored or rejected outright. If my friend finds out, he makes noise. His success clearing homicides is first-rate. Getting me paid for my time, not so much.

Business-wise, the other stuff doesn’t make much sense. I don’t care.

I enjoy seeing bad people pay.

What began on a Monday morning in early June seemed to have nothing to do with either half of my life.

Go know.

The answering service operator was a new hire named James, with a shaky voice and a way of turning statements into questions that implied self-esteem issues. Either he hadn’t been trained in handling non-emergency calls or he was a poor student.

“Dr. Delaware? I’ve got someone on the line, a Ms. Mars?”

“Don’t know her.”

“That’s her name? Mars? Like the candy bar?”

“Is it urgent?”

“Um . . . I don’t know, Dr. Delaware? She does sound kind of . . . weak?”

“Put her on.”

“You bet, Dr. Delaware? Have a great day?”

A faint voice as dry as leaf dust said, “Good morning, Doctor. This is Thalia Mars.”

“What can I do for you, Ms. Mars?”

“My guess is you don’t do house calls but I’ll supplement your fee if you see me at my home.”

“I’m a child psychologist.”

“Oh, I know that, Dr. Delaware. I’m well aware of the wonderful work you did at Western Pediatric Medical Center. I’m a great fan of the hospital. Ask Dr. Eagle.”

Ruben Eagle worked with Western Peds’ poorest patients as head of outpatient services and was routinely ignored by hospital fundraisers because the day-to-day maladies of the uninsured couldn’t compete for headlines with heart surgery, kidney transplants, and whiz-

bang cellular research.

Had he sent this woman to me as a way of stroking one of the few donors he had? It wasn’t like Ruben to politick without asking me first.

“Dr. Eagle referred you to me?”

“Oh, no, Doctor. I referred myself.”

“Ms. Mars, I’m not clear about what you want—”

“How could you be? I’d explain over the phone but that would take up too much of your valuable time. Once we get together, my check will include whatever charge you decide is appropriate for this call.”

“It’s not a matter of billing, Ms. Mars. If you could give me a basic explanation about what you need—”

“Of course. Your work suggests you’re an analytic and compassionate man and I could use both. I’m not a nut, Dr. Delaware, and you won’t need to travel far. I’m at the Aventura Hotel on Sunset, a short drive from you.”

“You’re visiting L.A.?”

“I live at the Aventura. That’s a bit of a tale, in itself. Would an initial retainer of, say, five thousand dollars set your mind at ease? I’d offer to wire it directly to you but that would require asking for your banking information and you’d suspect some sort of financial scam.”

“Five thousand is far too much and there’s no need for a retainer.”

“Don’t you take retainers when you work for the courts?”

“Sounds as if you’ve researched me, Ms. Mars.”

“I try to be thorough, Doctor, but I promise you there’s nothing ominous at play. The hotel’s a semi-public place and the front desk knows me well. Is there any way you could meet me today, say at three p.m.? You’d avoid rush-hour traffic.”

“What if I told you I had a prior appointment?”

“Then I’d request another time, Doctor. And if that failed, I’d beseech you.” She laughed. “There is an issue of time. I don’t have much of it.”

“You’re ill—”

“Never felt better,” said Thalia Mars. “However, on my next birthday I will be one hundred.”

“I see.”

“If you don’t believe me, when we get together I’ll show you my last active driver’s license. Flunked the test when I turned ninety-five and have depended, since, on the kindness of others and their internal combustion engines.”

My turn to laugh.

“So we’re on for three, Dr. Delaware?”

“All right.”

“Fabulous, you’re analytic, compassionate, and flexible. The front desk will direct you.”

CHAPTER

2

As soon as the line cleared, I phoned the Aventura.

Miss Mars is here. Would you care to be put through?

No, thanks.

My next call was Ruben. At a conference in Memphis. The Internet had nothing to say about Thalia Mars. No surprise, I supposed. She’d lived most of her long life before techno-geeks decided privacy was irrelevant.

I spent the rest of the morning writing reports, broke at one p.m., slapped together a couple of turkey sandwiches and brewed iced tea, brought a tray out to the garden. Pausing by the pond, I tossed pellets to the koi, continued to Robin’s studio.

Two projects occupied her workbench, a gorgeous two-hundred-year-old Italian mandolin restored for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and an electric contraption that resembled a giant garden slug.

The grub-like thing was part cello, part guitar, and dubbed the Alienator by the aging British rocker who’d commissioned it. Forced to learn classical violin as a kid, the invariably drunk Clive Xeno wanted to try his hand at bowing heavy metal. Per his insistence, the instrument was finished in metal-flake auto paint the color of pond sludge. An enamel-tile portrait of Jascha Heifetz protruded below the bridge, showing the maestro looking skeptical.

Robin, hair kerchiefed, wearing a black tee and overalls, was holding the monstrosity up to the skylight and shaking her head.

I said, “The customer’s always right.”

“Whoever coined that never met Clive. Ah, lunch. You’re a mind reader.”

Blanche, our little blond French bulldog, rose from her basket, waddled over, and rubbed her head on my ankle. I put the sandwiches on a table and fetched her a stick of jerky from the treat bag.

Robin gave the slug another look. “Five hundred hours of my life and I end up with this.”

“Think of it as an avant-garde masterpiece.”

“Isn’t ‘avant-garde’ French for ‘weird’?” Washing her hands, she kissed me, tossed a drop cloth over both instruments, untied her hair, and let loose a cascade of auburn ringlets. “This is after I convinced him to tone it down.”

“No more penis-shaped headstock.”

“That and Heifetz doing something gross. How’s your day going?”

“Finished some reports and heading out in a couple.”

“Milo beckoned?”

“I’m going to see a woman who claims to be nearly a hundred and wants to talk.”

“Claims to be? Like she’s only ninety-eight and is being pretentious?”

I laughed. “No reason to doubt her.”

“She introduced herself that way? I’m almost a hundred.”

“She worked it into the conversation.”

“Why not?” she said. “Last that long, you’d want to strut your stuff. My great-aunt Martina lived until ninety-eight and advertised it in every conversation. ‘Canned green beans, anyone? Been eating them for ninety-eight years and I’m still breathing.’ ”

She picked up a sandwich, nibbled, put it down. “Delicious, you’re the perfect man . . . so why would a hundred-year-old chick call you?”

“She didn’t go into details.”

“But you agreed to do a house call?”

“She’s one of Ruben Eagle’s donors.”

“So you do a good deed and get to escape the office. It has been a while since the Big Guy called. I’ve been wondering when it would get to you.”

“I’ve been restless?”

She kissed my nose. “No, darling, but I know you. The crime rate falls, good for society, boring for you.”

She took another bite of sandwich. “A hundred years old, huh? Imagine the things she’s seen.”

When you’ve lived in a city for years, there’s no need to know much about hotels. Robin and I sometimes ate or drank at the Bel-Air and back in my hospital days I’d attended fundraisers at Hiltons and such. My exposure to the Aventura had been driving west on Sunset and passing a directional sign staked at the mouth of an entrance framed by palms. First time for everything.

The opening fed to a cobblestone drive. The palms were overgrown, bordering on unruly. A second sign legislated 5 MPH. Speed bumps placed every twenty feet enforced the rule. Combined with the cobbles, that made for a kidney-thumping crawl.

Beautiful, sunny L.A. day. Isn’t it always? But when eucalyptus joined the vegetative mix, branches dense enough to form a roof created an artificial dusk. Ten spinal concussions in, I reached a fork marked by a clot of massive banana plants. Valet and self-parking to the right, hotel entrance to the left.

I pulled the Seville into a surprisingly shabby asphalt lot boxed on three sides by pale-pink stucco walls and backed by fifty-foot Canary Island pines. Out-of-state plates and rental cars predominated. A couple of golf carts in Reserved slots. No valets in sight.

I parked, walked for a while, finally arrived at a structure that might’ve been designed by Clive Xeno during a bender: two stories of tile-roofed hacienda in the same pallid pink, attached to a four-story steel-and-bronze glass cylinder.

Cracks had formed in the older building’s stucco where it merged with the tower. Spanish Colonial mama struggling to birth a giant alien baby.

The only indication of the hotel’s identity was a rusty iron A above glass doors centering the newer addition. When I was two steps away, the panels hissed open, creating a maw that led to a three-story atrium—a tube within a tube. Background music was a brain-eroding electronic mantra flicked with random bird peeps. The ceiling was matte black embedded with starry-night LED bulbs. What might have been actual constellations, but I’m no astronomer.

To the right, thirty-plus feet of waterfall trickled down a pebbly glass wall. A scatter of leather deco-revival chairs dyed a strange liverish red were sided by chunks of resin pretending to be boulders. Empty chairs but for a hipster couple in their thirties facing each other as they worked separate iPhones. A girl around five stood near the woman, limp doll in her hand, thumb in her mouth.

Ranchero Revival meets Missile Silo meets twenties Paris meets Fred Flintstone via Beijing.

With an overhead tribute to the Griffith Park planetarium.

Maybe dealing with that on a daily basis helped a hundred-year-old brain stay in shape.

To the left, a pair of chrome elevators preceded glass doors leading to the older wing. At the center, Reception and Concierge shared a poured-concrete counter. Three pallid, ponytailed people in their twenties were on duty, a woman and two men, each the same five-six or so and wearing Asian-style tunics colored the hepatic hue of the chairs.

No name tags, no notice of my approach as thirty fingers continued to tap laptops.

When I reached the counter, one of the men smiled with astonishing warmth while continuing to type. “May I help you?”

“I’m here to see Ms. Mars.”

“Thalia,” said the woman. Now three wan faces found me fascinating.

“We love Thalia,” said the other man.

The woman said, “You’re her doctor. She said to send you right over.”

“She’s in Bungalow Uno,” said the first man.

The woman eyed the glass doors. “If you go through there, you’ll be in El O-ree-hee-nal. Just keep going and go outside and you’ll see a sign leading to The Green.”

I said, “O-ree—”

The first man said, “Ori-hi-naaal. Spanish for ‘original.’ ”

Second said, “What’s left of the old hotel. The Aventura believes in preservation and synthesis.”

The woman said, “Uno’s the last bungalow.”

First said, “We love Thalia.”

On the other side of the glass was a rose-carpeted hallway lined with numbered oak doors. The first few rooms had been converted to computerized card-slot entry. The rest retained heavy cast-bronze knobs and keyholes.

Partially ori-hi-naaal.

The corridor emptied to an echoing loggia that led outdoors. The air smelled like freshly cut grass. The Green was a wide stone path swathing through more palms, plus ferns and bromeliads. Like the entry drive, dimmed by overgrowth.

The first bungalow appeared fifty feet in, white clapboard, tar-roofed, swaddled in green. A sign over the door read Ocho: 8. The countdown continued with a series of identical structures through Dos: 2.

Then, a traipse through jungle until a larger building backed by a high pink wall slipped into view.

Uno: 1 was set on a raised foundation with three steps leading to a screened porch. A roof pitched higher, a brick chimney, and black shutters set it apart from the other bungalows. Paint flaked from boards, the roof was patched with tar where shingles had come loose.

Once upon a time, the VIP suite?

The location afforded privacy, the high wall security. But the distance from the parking lot would mean a serious hike for an older person. Maybe Thalia Mars was one of those super-specimens.

The porch door was open. As I climbed the steps, the arid voice I’d heard over the phone said, “Dr. Delaware! Who knew you’d be so handsome?”

Eighty or so pounds of vintage humanity in a Ming-blue dress sat in a rattan peacock chair and smiled up at me. The chair looked identical to the throne Sydney Greenstreet had occupied in Casablanca. The actor had been four times that weight and overflowed the cane. The current occupant evoked a toddler playing grown-up.

“Ms. Mars.” I extended my hand and received a quick, firm shake by fingers that felt like chopsticks. A ring set with a huge amethyst collided with my knuckles.

Thalia Mars’s wide amused mouth was augmented by meticulously applied coral lipstick. Her eyes were clear brown. Shoulder-length hair tinted the ivory of old piano keys had been whipped into a meringue of waves. Nearly a century of gravity had done its inevitable thing with her jawline, but a dagger-thin face below the cloud of hair retained enough integrity to suggest a once-firm chin and prominent cheekbones.

An enjoyable book in the Alex Delaware series for fans familiar with the characters
By Sandy Kay
This book is, if I am counting correctly, the 32nd book in the Alex Delaware series. I have read most, if not all of them (after all this time it's a little hard to keep track of them all). This book assumes that the reader is extremely familiar with the main characters -- Milo Sturgis, Alex Delaware, and Alex's girlfriend Robin Castagna. There is very little background on the characters, and how Milo and Alex started working together, what Alex's professional background is, what Milo's relationship is, or what Robin does for a living. If you don't already know this before starting the book, you won't learn much of it by reading this book. As a long-time reader of the series, I am glad the author doesn't spend a lot of the book catching new readers up with the characters. But for this reason, it is important to have read at least some of the earlier books in the series before reading this book or you will miss a lot of subtext.

I enjoy this series and these characters so I am inclined to enjoy the books in the series. This was not my favorite book in the series, but it kept my attention the entire way through and the farther I read in the book, the more I liked the story. The pace was a little slower, especially at the beginning, than in many of the books. Unlike most of the others, Milo doesn't initiate the action in this book with a murder case for Alex to consult on. Alex has a meeting with an older patient (odd because he is a child psychologist), which leads to him calling Milo in to investigate. And unlike some of the other books in the series, there is more methodical investigating (i.e. mystery) and less chasing around being in danger (i.e. thriller). I enjoyed watching the investigation unfold as Milo and Alex pursue various leads to learn who killed the victim.

It is nice to know that after so many books in the series, the author can still write a story that keeps my attention and makes for an enjoyable mystery.

If you are a fan of the series, I think this is a book you will enjoy.

32nd Dr. Alex Delaware thriller
By Cheryl Stout
Boy, how the years have flown by. I find it hard to believe that I've been reading this engaging series by author Kellerman for 30+ years but it's true. I can even remember reading the first book in the series - WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS - and calling my mother to tell her about this new author I'd "discovered". I have read all the series and my mother did too - at least up to her passing a few years ago.

Some of the books in the series have been better than others and I feel this one leans towards the plus side. There was definitely a feeling of THE MALTESE FALCON about this offering, with gangsters, a femme fatale and a hidden treasure.

It was a bit more lighthearted at times, as compared to some of the author's earlier works. It all started with Alex meeting with 99 year-old Thalia Mars, a woman I would love to meet in real life.

There are murders, mayhem, and plenty of people to keep track of. It is gruesome in spots and has one violent rape scene, so be forewarned.

But if you like the rest of the series, don't miss this one. Plus if you like murder mysteries, thrillers, or psychological suspense, you won't be going wrong with HEARTBREAK HOTEL.

Talking women

Awakened to Abuse After Decades
By carola
Several weeks before leaving my abusive husband after 42 years of marriage, I read "The Verbally Abusive Relationship" by Patricia Evans. I noted many passages that clearly described the abusive tactics he was using on me.

The information, however, was just so irrefutable, so undeniably true, it was far too painful for me to fully realize and assimilate at the time.

Sixteen months after leaving him, I picked the book off the closet shelf and re-read it, this time noticing many more abusive characteristics of his and experiences I went through in the past. Numerous passages were boldly marked this time, and many more notes were made. Virtually every page held so many similarities to what I had been experiencing in this abusive relationship.

After decades of being unaware of this type of abuse, I finally arrived at the realization that he was indeed extremely verbally abusive during our marriage. This was a tremendous revelation to me, as I had unconsciously hidden and "forgotten" even the physical assault that occurred early in the marriage. Before we married, however, he was attentive and I thought he loved me as I loved him.

I thought that verbal abuse was mainly name calling and hurling outright insults. My to be ex husband did not often call me names and obvious insults were rather rare, although he did call me stupid and crazy a few times. Yes, he did beat me severely early in our marriage, but he was mainly a covert abuser. His methods were insidious and had me feel that I was to blame for just about everything that went wrong.

He would often criticize men and women on TV, their physical faults, mouth too large, crooked nose, too fat, too thin, etc. He was particularly critical of confident women broadcasters, and would be very insulting of them. I finally stood up to him and let him know that he was being very cruel. In hindsight I realize I felt more protective of other people than myself.

One of the most painful and damaging aspects of his abusive ways was his obvious delight in seeing my hurt responses to his insidiously cruel remarks... the smirk, the laugh, the hate-filled look. As time went on, I learned to hide my feelings and to refrain from reasoning or arguing with him. I could never "win" anyway. It hurts to realize that the one who promised to love and cherish you didn't really care for you.

He seemed to get a lot of pleasure in seeing me suffer physically as well. It was a freezing cold day and I went out to the garage to bring in an item from the car. I somehow locked myself out of the house. I was dressed only in my indoor clothing, and frantically knocked on the doors and windows for him to let me inside. I was becoming very cold, and being in my 60's, was concerned that I would quickly become hypothermic. He did not answer my cries. I went in side the car, but it wasn't any warmer, as I didn't have the keys to start it. I was too embarrassed to ask for help from a neighbour. Finally after about 30 minutes or so and repeated knocks and cries he answered the door. He said he didn't hear me earlier. He appeared very unconcerned about me and the whole incident. I just let it go as I knew better than to argue with him...he would just yell irrational insults at me. I just couldn't handle his insults any longer.

Shortly afterwards, when our son and his wife and children were visiting, he recounted his story, about my locking myself out of the house. He made me sound stupid. I was hurt, and quietly remarked that I became very cold and wondered when he would answer the door.

Before we married, I happily looked forward to being his wife. I was a loving and attentive wife to him, and was faithful to him throughout our marriage, working very hard in raising our children, cooking good nutritious meals and maintaining the home and businesses we owned. He basically ignored our children, even though I tried to speak with him, telling him that they would be harmed by his emotional distance. He did not care to listen and brushed me off.

Almost all of my efforts seemed to be wasted on him. This happens very often in abusive relationships...the abuser is never really satisfied. He would criticize and downgrade me often, and I began to feel worthless. I had no self-esteem as a result.

Like so many abusers, he was very polite and good-mannered to others. Family, business associates, friends at church... they were completely oblivious to his abusive ways. He had developed a charming persona that he could control at will, that he could switch on and off like a light bulb, and he especially liked to play up this persona in church. He had a dark and angry side that he did not display to others.

For brief periods over that long marriage I went to several counsellors for "depression" but I didn't mention my husband's abuse, so the counsellors were not able to help me. This shows how blinded I was to his abuse. I descended ever more deeply into the abyss of despair and self-blame. Several years ago, I finally mentioned his physical abuse to a new counsellor. At the time I had not yet acknowledged his verbal and emotional abuse. The counsellor suggested I close my eyes and pretend I was on a beach somewhere with my abusive husband. I didn't retain that counsellor for long, either.

The author mentions the description of the Covert Abuser as "also being angry and hostile. However, they don't express anger in the pattern of the anger addict... they may be more inclined to develop long-range plans to control and manipulate their partners." How terribly true this was in my case.

The author also describes Denial as being "one of the most insidious categories of verbal abuse because it denies the reality of the partner." Again, completely true in my experience and I could not agree more.

In the months leading to the separation, he would become angry and ask why I married him. I would reply because I loved him very much. He would sneer and make a denigrating sound. This, I felt, was his covert way of turning around the usual "Why did I marry you" remark. I didn't ask him the same question. I was afraid of his response.

Another illustration of his type of abuse: Several years ago, he and I were having lunch at a restaurant. There was no argument involved, either beforehand or at the time (as if that should matter). I started choking on food stuck in my throat. He was sitting next to me, and made absolutely no effort to help me. He simply sat there while I was desperately trying to cough up the food, feeling I would die. Finally I managed to do so with no help from him.

After arriving home, I calmly asked him why he didn't help me. He muttered something like "I dunno," and appeared completely unconcerned about this incident. I felt he hated me so much that he wished I would die.

In the months before leaving, I had tried to talk with him, asking him to offer a heartfelt apology and seek help. He would become very angry and would refuse, blaming me instead.

"The Verbally Abusive Relationship" helped me to become aware of verbal abuse and the damage that it causes in terms of destroying self-esteem, spiritual, emotional and physical health. The perpetrator of abuse ravages the soul, crushes the spirit and can ultimately murder the partner that is held in the abuser's grip. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is going through abuse and as a warning to others.

This book will provide valuable and enlightening information to anyone who wants to become more informed about the tactics of the abuser.

I'm a Man and This Book Saved My Spirit Too
By IT Specialist
I am a man who didn't find the information in this book biased towards woman in the slightest. By the end of the first chapter I was swapping the gender of the pronouns without conscious thought. This book is about recognizing and responding to abuse. Regardless of gender, people in abusive relationships have been systematically trained not to trust their own inner voice. Criticizing this book seems to risk further befuddled those that need it most. I think the lack of sensitivity to this possibility on behalf of the critical reviewers suggests that either they don't fully understand the dynamics of abuse, or else they DO understand the dynamics and want the potential purchasers of this book to keep doubting their inner voices.

To address the issue of gender it might be useful to add a chapter of research on how verbally abusive women differ from their male counterparts, as well as how male victims differ from female victims. As a man trapped in an abusive relationship for 20 years I can make an educated guess that there are some significant differences. For instance since men are often not as in touch with their own emotions as women are, and because the stereotypical male prototype is John Wayne, I would guess that many men silently suffer abuse right to their grave. It would be a worthwhile chapter if it helps just one male victim to begin trusting his inner voice.

Would be 5 stars, but imho dangerous advice
By Amazon Customer
This book would have merited 5 stars except for one major issue. The author does an OUTSTANDING job picking apart the confusing, tangled web that chronic verbal abuse creates. Being the partner of an abusive spouse, and having no prior experience to abuse, I had absolutely no idea that my plummeting self esteem, my feelings of total overwhelming confusion, were the result of verbal abuse. I, like most people, I imagine, assumed that "verbal abuse" was someone calling you a terrible name.

I did not know about gaslighting.

Had I known, and recognized the verbal abuse for what it was, I would have also understood that abuse tends to escalate. I might have been long gone before my spouse ever got the chance to put his hands on me. So to that end, I wish I would have read this book many months ago.

My 3 star rating stems from the last quarter of the book, in which the author discusses how one ought to respond to the verbal abuse once she's recognized it: "Stop it! Don't talk to me like that! Look at me! Nonsense! Why did you say?" This is dangerous. Dangerous and ill advised. The author lost me completely with that. Apparently, she recommends that approach as kind of a way to test the severity of the problem: answering back in this way might surprise the abusive partner into "snapping out of it". Another suggestion the author makes is to tape record the abusive partner, the idea being that if he/she objects, he/she knows that what they are doing is wrong. I don't want to assume that all verbal abusers are going to some point escalate into physical abusers. But the strong possibility exists. There is an undeniable liklihood that to an angry and controlling partner, any or all of the above responses will be viewed as complete outrageous defiance. And they will feel perfectly entitled to their reaction to this defiant new you, which will involve punishment.

Patricia Evans, thank you. But readers, do yourself a favor. When the realization of what your partner is doing to you dawns, don't risk your personal safety by confronting them. Get your exit strategy in order. Don't wait.

Paid to Think: A Leader's Toolkit for Redefining Your Future, by David Goldsmith

Have you ever thought about the fact that a craftsman has more and better tools to solve challenges on the job than the leader of a business or organization does? Leadership “tools” are usually defined as computers, spreadsheets, data, and even experience, but in reality, leaders need thinking tools that are hard to come by, so they find themselves hunting and pecking for answers in books, at seminars, through on-the-job training programs, from mentors, and at business schools, and still, they’re left with gaps. Surely, most leaders are good at what they do, but the daily challenges of their jobs, like accelerating growth, increasing productivity, driving innovation, doing more with less, and balancing work with life don’t come with some sort of leadership toolkit...until now.

In Paid to Think, international consultant David Goldsmith presents his groundbreaking approach to leadership and management based on research revealing the twelve specific activities that all leaders perform on a daily basis, and he provides you with each activity’s accompanying tools and instructions proven to boost your performance and that of your entire organization.

Take the uncertainty out of everyday leading, convert ideas to realities, and maximize your intellectual value. Learn how decision makers at some of the world’s most successful organizations have already used Paid to Think’s universal and easily transferable tools—regardless of their industries, sectors, geographic locations, or management levels—as their greatest advantages in achieving more, earning more, and living more.

A one-volume library of business information, insights, and wisdom
By Robert Morris
Note: The title is somewhat misleading because the scope and depth of the material that David Goldsmith provides in this book are far greater than its title suggests. My fear is that the title may discourage at least a few people from discovering that this is indeed a "one-volume library of business information, insights, and wisdom."

As I began to work my way through David Goldsmith's book, I was reminded of Tom Davenport's latest, Judgment Calls, in which he and co-author Brooke Manville offer "an antidote for the Great Man theory of decision making and organizational performance": [begin italics] organizational judgment [end italics]. That is, "the collective capacity to make good calls and wise moves when the need for them exceeds the scope of any single leader's direct control." The success or failure of an organization depends almost entirely on the judgment of all who comprise its workforce.

Why? Because, each day on the job, they must make all manner of decisions of varying degree of complexity and in a collaborative culture, they are expected to help other make sound decisions. With rare exception, the best decisions are based on the best information. That is why Davenport and Manville stress the value of collective judgment (i.e. "We know more than any one of us does") and I agree. However, as Goldsmith explains in his brilliant one-volume business library, individuals must make dozens of decisions each day that have varying degrees of importance...and impact. They are paid to think, yes, but also to make sound decisions and some do that better than others.

With Lorrie Goldsmith, he really does provide what is suggested in my review's title, an excerpt from remarks made by Jay Abraham in the Foreword. Here's the context: Paid to Think is "an all-encompassing new vision and playbook for managers that applies brilliantly and immediately to just about every managerial, operational, strategic, competitive, or organizational issue your organization faces [or could face] and will unquestionably face in the world, today."

Goldsmith's expressed objective is to provide a thorough explanation of how to "make better, faster, and more accurate decisions that will ultimately lead to improved outcomes with less risk, waste, and mistakes." In the Introduction, he immediately establishes a direct and personal, at times conversational and always collegial rapport with his reader. He provides (literally) an abundance of valuable information, invaluable insights, and practical advice. As is true of few other business books, other readers will feel as I did that Goldsmith wrote this book specifically for me.

The first chapter, "Enterprise Thinking," all by itself is worth far more than the cost of this book. Goldsmith introduces his perspectives on how best to create strategy, learn, perform, and forecast. He identifies and explains 12 practices of Enterprise Thinking (ET), organized as follows: Strategizing (e.g. #3: Establishing Alliances), Learning (e.g. #5: Acquiring New Knowledge), Forecasting (#8: Forecasting the Future), and Performing (e.g. #11: Innovating Everywhere). "I want you to think of ET as a group of activities that are so enmeshed with each other that even a slight improvement in one will improve the performance of all." In fact, that can be said of [begin italics] all [end italics] relationships between and among all leadership and management initiatives by both individuals and teams.

These are among the dozens of passages that caught my eye:

o An Overview of the Enterprise Thinking Categories and Corresponding Activities (Pages 10-15)

I know of no other single business book that offers more and better information, insights, and advice that can help almost anyone to know more precisely where to focus one's attention and energies as well as how to put the new knowledge to immediate and practical use. As David Goldsmith points out, "The better able a leader is to think through an idea before committing to action, the greater the chances an organization has to achieve higher returns, all while mitigating risk and reducing expense...In brief, thinking better, faster, and more accurately before you act improves the chances that the idea or initiative is a winning one and worth the expenditures that will be made in later stages of development and launch."

As another holiday season approaches, I presume to suggest that this book would be an excellent gift for anyone now preparing for a career in business or has only recently embarked on one. However, I think this book can also be of substantial value to middle managers who have more to learn but less to unlearn than do those at the C-level.

I am a C-level exec, and find this ENORMOUSLY helpful
By Michael O'Brien
My wife gave me Paid to Think as a birthday gift and have found it the most valuable business book I have ever read. I keep thinking, "I wish someone had told me that earlier in my career!"

This is the kind of book that when your skills wane and you want to read something new, just keep re-reading this book. In my nearly 25 years of professional experience, I can say that this covers everything a leader/manager needs to know. Everything.

You can think of this book as an MBA-in-a-box. It is a very practical how-to manual for leadership and management. It is a big book (599 pages) and dense - it is not a book you breeze through. However, it is well-written, and simple to understand.

Goldsmith believes that effective leadership and management is based on four things:

* Strategizing: Developing plans, creating new products and services, establishing alliances, learning technology
* Learning: Acquiring new knowledge, enhancing global awareness, watching competition
* Performing: Leading the charge, empowering others, innovating everywhere, selling continuously
* Forecasting: forecasting the future

All four weave together - where you cannot strategize without the ability to forecast, you cannot perform without learning, you cannot learn without strategizing, etc. The book is broken out into these four areas - but Goldsmith does a good job pulling them all together.

Not everything in this book is original - which I believe is a tremendous strength. Goldsmith is wise to understand that there are existing strategies that already work well. The purpose of this book is not to give you 100% original thought - but to teach you everything you need to know (whether his idea or someone else's) to be an effective leader. For example, in managing projects, he talked about the Critical Path Method that was invented in the 1950s - there is nothing he could invent that is better. This said, he does have some incredibly creative approach to problems that I have never seen before - so it is a good mix.

Goldsmith is also good at challenging conventional wisdom. For example, he takes exception to the phrase, "Our employees are our most valuable asset" suggesting that good employees are the end product of good processes, good tools, and the right environment.

I am an avid Harvard Business Review (HBR) reader and read a lot of business books. Most business books have a gem or two that I take forward but this one book has reset my expectations for what a business book should deliver. It is pure meat - with practical advice on every page. I wish Amazon allowed for more than five starts - because I would give this 100 if I could.

A journey designed to help you grow personally & professionally
By Janine L McBee
"Paid to THINK: A Leader's Toolkit for Redefining Your Future" is a journey designed to help you grow personally and professionally. Each chapter was written to stand on its own, to challenge and inspire to action. To test this, I went to the index to find a concept of current interest to me - connections. This led me to Chapter 8 - Enhancing Global Awareness.

David begins the chapter with `THE MOMENT YOU TURNED TO this page, you formed an opinion of this chapter that quite possibly doesn't have a whole lot to do with what you're about to read." This is so David. I don't think I've ever had a conversation with him where he did not challenge and expand my thinking.

From the beginning, the chapter read as if we were having just another conversation. Yet, David quickly gets your attention as to the importance of the topic: "enhancing global awareness is an essential activity that every decision maker must perform to keep pace in today's world...Being globally aware is not about your organization's reach -- whether your Desired Outcome is to have local, regional, domestic, international, multinational, or a global presence -- it's about expanding and enriching your thinking with real and current information about opportunities, solutions, and challenges that exist or that can be created."

David goes on to provide practical illustrations and tools addressing:
* What Does It Mean to Be "Globally Aware"?
* The connection between Global Awareness and Career Growth
* Global Awareness Improves Decision Making
* How Global Awareness Turbocharges the Enterprise Thinker
* The Approach to Becoming Globally Aware
* The Four Components of Global Information
* Sources of Global Information
* Putting Global Awareness to Practical Use
* Maps versus Words on a Global Scale
* and more

Full disclosure - I've had the privilege to work with David since 2006 when he first presented for the Texas Credit Union League at our Leadership Conference. Since then, he has served on our Southwest CUNA Management School faculty team. I count him as both friend and mentor. Over the years we've had many conversations about the book, I've read chapters in process, and seen David challenge our students using "Paid to Think". I appreciate David's passion and integrity, treasuring his insights. A loyal fan, my opinions are my own.

Getting Women on to Corporate Boards: A Snowball Starting in Norway, by Silke Machold, Morten Huse, Katrin Hansen, Marina Brogi

'This is an extremely insightful book on an important and timely topic - how to get women on to corporate boards. I am proud to have been a part of the discussion and processes presented in this book, and I am impressed by how the editors have put together a systematic and comprehensive overview of the snowball effects of the Norwegian gender balance law. This book will definitely be influential when policy-makers and politicians in various countries are considering voluntary actions or legal regulations to empower women in corporate life.'
- Kjell Magne Bondevik, Director, Oslo Centre for Peace and Human Rights and Former Prime Minister of Norway (1997-2000 and 2001-2005)

'This book provides significant and important insight into the continuing challenge in getting more women on to corporate boards globally. Catalyst has always believed that competing in a global economy requires that companies leverage the talents of both men and women leaders. This book's evidence-based reflections about gender balance in the boardroom, from Norway and beyond, help further the dialogue on this important business issue.'
- Ilene H. Lang, President and CEO, Catalyst

This book provides unique insights into how the idea of quota laws to get women on to corporate boards gained international momentum from its origins in Norway. Invaluable insights are gained through the stories of actors involved in shaping the discourse and practice on women of boards.

In exploring political contexts, the role of the advocacy movement, experiences of women directors themselves and latest research findings, the contributors provide a comprehensive overview of the rationales, processes and outcomes of formal approaches to gender diversity on boards. Drawing on insights from political, business and academic actors, the book discusses how and why the Norwegian law on gender equality on corporate boards is turning into a blueprint for action internationally.

Getting Women on to Corporate Boards will prove an invaluable resource for policy-makers, principle-setters, practitioners and students interested in the international lessons from Norway, as well as for current and potential female directors.

Review
This slim but informative volume contains contributions from practitioners, policy-makers, principle-setters, advocacy groups and researchers on gender balance in the boardroom, the outcomes of the Norwegian quota law and its snowball effects in other countries...The book contains personal stories and research from around the world. . . The stories of the Norwegian pioneers were of most interest to me, providing color and a clearer picture of what was involved - more than any piece of statistical research can deliver. However, the book also has much to offer to Americans and others who must argue not for justice but bottom line performance...Whether you are interested in micro or macro issues of economics, politics or justice - it delights. --James McRitchie, CorpGov.net

great alternative learning style
By Amber H.
Okay so the pictures of the guy in white sneakers are super dumb- but the book IS very helpful for a beginner; It comes with small stickers to place underneath the strings to practice fingering per different color stickers numbered 1-5 indicating 1st, second, third... fingering- you get the idea; I wrote on the stickers the letter of each note so I wouldn't have to remember which colors indicated which notes; and the stickers come off clean with no residue; this is just an added bonus- b/c I initially bought this book over others- b/c it shows pictures of a players' hand with fingers on the correct frets along with the actual chart; Personally, it is much easier for me to look at a picture of someone playing the note rather than a chart with dots.And as I said the stickers make it a breeze- I don't have to look down every time I want to play a note to see if my fingers are in the right place. Also the book comes with a pic and a full length poster labeled "notes and scales" to refer to for all of the notes.I haven't really read through the book- I'm a scimmer anyway- and the first chapter is all about positioning and tuning- which I already know; But if you are a visual learner- and have had trouble in the past- get this book to start with; It's definitely learn at your own pace- and doesn't remind me of a boring text book- other authors should be as innovative;
and yes it seems he numbers the strings backwards -but to each his own I guess- and with the stickers and pictures for reference, this has not confused me.
I have been trying to learn guitar for forever- but the sheer boredom of most teaching styles has turned me off- this is straight to the point- no "hot cross buns"- and perfect for an ADD brain like mine to scim and take what information I need to build a foundation and learn my own way.

I'd like to give a 4.5...
By Diego O'Toole
This book takes an agressive approach to learning, with each "week" adding a lot of new concepts. I know a little bit about music, but I'm new to the guitar. For me, I like it a lot. People who don't play another instrument might find it more intimidating, I'm not sure. But then, no one is forcing you to finish a week's lessons in an actual week.

What's good: it starts you off right away playing decent music. It begins with chords and some useful theory. You're moving down the neck right away. Playing along with the CD is fun, and it forces you to keep up with the tempo.

If the book had been proofread better, I'd give it 5 stars. For example, there are places where the text has both a fret number and standard musical notation, and the fret number is wrong. The book refers you to play along with the instructional CD backing tracks, but it doesn't tell you which track number to play. It's easy enough to figure out what was meant, but a little more care would have been better.

The wall chart is nice. I haven't used the color-coded stickies on my guitar (I think they're a little silly), but maybe some people would find them useful.

Despite my little gripes, I really like the organization of the book, and it's a nice package with the CD and chart.

No book is ever going to be a suitable replacement for an actual guitar teacher, but if you want a straight forward guide that will set out the foundations in a clear and easy to digest manner this book is great.
