Good reading.

I'm a good bit older than the suggested age range for this "juvenile reading" book. However, it's as much of a page-turner as Grisham's adult thrillers. Young Mr. Boone, middle school son of two lawyers, uses his smarts and legal knowledge to investigate a disappearance, the victim of which is a good friend. With help from his friends, and his black-sheep uncle, will Theo find the missing friend? It took only a few hours for me to find out, ripping through each page with great reading pleasure.

Theodore Boone is back again, and in John Grisham's newest mystery, Theo's friend, April, has vanished! The only problem is that no one has a clue what happened. Theo, her best friend, decides to do his own secret investigations with his closest friends and his ex-lawyer uncle Ike. Even working together on search efforts, they are getting nowhere fast, and everyone starts to wonder, "How long until we see her on the news dead or injured?"

This book is very well done. It is a page-turner that is almost impossible to put down. I recommend this to a younger audience, but even adults will like it!

A Solid Offering from Grisham for Kids!

In terms of reviewing this book, it is important to think of it from the standpoint of a 11-15 reading the book and not an adult as the young adult is really Grisham's primary target audience. With that in mind, in this story Grisham reintroduces us to Theodore Boone--a young man with a penchant for detective work and a budding 13-yr old "attorney." Both of his parents are lawyers and as a result he has a unique opportunity to combine his entrepreneurial skills with the ability to learn at his parents feet. In this the second Theodore Boone story by Grisham, he is immediately thrown into the fray when his best friend April goes missing. He doesn't necessarily believe at first that she was in fact taken by someone else but after days of her continuing to go missing as well as the appearance of an old family relative back from jail, he fears the worst. The story continues with his somewhat odd uncle Ike once again coming on the scene to help out and eventually play a big role in the resolution of this mystery.

From the standpoint of recommending it to children, I thought the subject matter was appropriate for agest 13-and up. The subject matter of kidnapping might be a bit tough for kids younger than that to take and sometimes the descriptions got fairly graphic. The story also touches on divorce which is a subject that needs to be handled carefully around young children. I was slightly dissapointed with how Grisham chose to end the book. It felt very abrupt and I thought he could have done a bit of a better job goign slightly deeper into the relationship between Theodore and his parents and even Theodore and April. Overall however a strong book and one that will likely do well especially with teens.

Amazing book on US activities in Pakistan and Afghanistan

This book is self published but amazingly in depth researched. Some of its conclusions are conjecture but
many an observer have said the same thing - the US engagement in the area is not altruistic but for gain and profit, at high cost for all involved. The cost for the local population is especially high where local casualty count - mostly innocent civilians - has exceded that of 9/11 by a factor of at least 30 - 50. The ensuing agony for the local populations is horrendous. In its foreign policy the author points out that the US again and again aligns itself with exactly the kinds of undemocratic regimes it purports to oppose. The book says it is never too late to return to the road of virtue and the author is asking the US to change the policy of death and destruction to something more positive for the benefit of all concerned. Let's hope something better can be built based on love and compassion.

On the negative side I noted numerous gramatical errors but the ideas expressed are easy to understand all the same. Many books saying similar things are available on amazon.com like The End of Arrogance and The Icaros Syndrome and Vietnam - the Full History and Fixing the Facts. Freedom of expression is a blessing.

A Perfect Preschool Workbook!

I am currently home schooling my first grader and though my daughter wanted to join us she was often left out and frustrated with our challenging curriculum. I bought this book for my 4 year old daughter so she could do "school" too and it's a perfect combination of fun school work that will teach her the basics before she reaches kindergarten. Don't get me wrong, it's a great book - my only beef is that there are no "instructions" on how to navigate and complete the book, or which sections to do in sequence. You have to purchase another one of their books in order to know how to properly utilize these lessons. So not stoked about that part. I still use it, and just jump around page to page, hoping that I'm doing things in a logical way.

Perfect for a 3 year old

This was the first actual "workbook" we started with our daughter when she turned three. The book is very simple and not too difficult for her age. She can follow the instructions easily and enjoys working in it. Overall a good choice for the early preschooler.

This anthology takes an in-depth look at a church that is little known to many outside Egypt or the world of Oriental Orthodox Christianity. Its various articles explore the history, theology, and culture of Coptic Orthodoxy, as well as the roles of such key figures as recent popes Kyrillos VI and Shenouda III in the formidable renewal of their church. Others deal with significant themes such as the role of women and nuns within church and society, the changing role of laity, and shepherding the dispersion of Coptic Christianity due to recent emigration. The book as a whole is well researched, clear, and accessible. Since it was written in the 1990s, there is no doubt a need for updating and revision, but this book serves as an excellent introduction and overview. It will continue to provide understanding of Coptic Orthodoxy within its expanding context, and it will extend the efforts of church leaders to build bridges to the rest of ecumenical Christianity.

This collection of articles and essays on the Coptic Orthodox Church today is a gem. It is full of information and insights into both the practical and the spiritual sides of the Coptic Orthodox Church. I have had great use for and delight in the articles by dr. Samuel Rubenson and Dina el-Khawaga as well as Nora Stene, on topics as diverse as renewal of the Coptic theology, lay participation in the Church, and Coptic children in the Church. I look forward to the rest of the essays when I have enough time to give them, because they truly deserve it.
