About the Author
Gershon J. Shugar is the author of The Chemist’s Ready Reference Handbook, also published by McGraw-Hill, and professor emeritus of engineering technologies at Essex County College, Newark, New Jersey. In 1947, Dr. Shugar founded a chemical manufacturing business that became the largest exclusive pearlescent pigment manufacturing company in the United States. In 1968, he was appointed assistant professor of chemistry at Rutgers University, where he taught until his appointment at Essex County College. Donald A. Drum is chairman of the technology/natural sciences division of Butler Community College in Butler, Pennsylvania. An expert on hazardous materials, he is a member of the Butler County Hazmat Advisory Team, which has been cited in more than 100 texts and professional and governmental publications. Jack Lauber is section chief of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Air Resources. He is a diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and a Qualified Environmental Professional, certified by the Institute for Professional Environmental Practice. Shari L. Bauman is a research assistant and laboratory technician with the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Minerals Resources.

Beauty as the Veneer of Society

Prof. Stanfield takes readers through a literary odyssey in Colombia's socio-economic and political history, many elements of which I missed when living there for three years as a Peace Corps volunteer in the early 1960s. HIs time period goes back to 1825, when the country's total population was 1.3 million--35% of them Indian. Today, it is 47+ million, with less than 6% as Indian. The beasts of civil war and political violence went hand in hand when eight civil wars rocked the country between 1831-1902. Fourteen civil wars broke out over the same period. In the first half of the 20th Century, bipartisan governance dominated the political scene, quieting the beast. Ominously, this period ushered in the next era of Colombian history: La Violencia. The Liberal leader, Jorge Gaitan was assassinated in 1948, igniting the flash point of civil war with Conservatives. In the book "La Violencia en Colombia", sociologist Orlando Fals Borda wrote: "it was a lone act which stripped with a single bullet the thin veneer of civility from an entire society".

The mortality rate relative to a 14 million population base was greater than that experienced by the 145 million population in the U. S. during WW II.
It marked a time that became for survivors an enduring argument against remembrance. And yet ... there emerged the fig leaf of beauty amidst a roiled, genocidal national character, when highly competitive contests to crown national beauties blossomed in most every village and metropolitan
area of Colombia. The murder of Gaitan led to a breakdown of elite politics. "Partisan civil war placed beauty and pageants center stage as the symbolic, nonpartisan, civic and peaceful ritual of positive Colombian national identity. Beauty and beast joined in a passionate tango, each partner with proscribed steps, neither able to part from the other for the rest of the 20th Century."

The new Leadership Gold Standard!!

Wow. This book has it all! TJ's stories and ideas are a refreshing new look at life, both in and outside of the workplace. Finally, a motivational/leadership book written by the everyman. TJ seems very authentic with his caring ways, and it is inspiring to see how he has overcome his adversities through life.

The Caring Warrior is a must read for any leaders, or aspiring leaders to learn how to get the most out of their team with a few simple steps! Overall, a great book for anyone looking to be a better person and leader. Highly recommended!

This book is a testament to good leadership in all aspects of one’s life. TJ’s passion for people and making sure they are realizing their goals is infectious! This book points out all the ways we all give in to the grind and forget about the things that really matter in life; the people we connect with every day. A great view of the Web programming forest, with just enough trees and leaves.

Three and a half years ago I was given the task of teaching a "Net-centric Computing" course to upper-division students who already had a firm grasp of C++ and Java Programming. I scrambled to cobble together a course by having students buy three different books and refer to many Web resources. On two subsequent passes through the course, I experimented further with materials, but became increasingly frustrated that I couldn't find the right combination of coverage of material, depth of coverage, and cost of materials. Finally, I came across this book by David Parson's and saw in it what I wish I had had to begin with.

Parson's text is by far the best of the many web programming related textbooks and professional references that I have examined. His presentation of material is at a suitable level of breadth and depth for a college-level course for students who already have a good grasp of Java. The book covers the sprawling territory of Web programming all the way from the client (with HTML and CSS) to the server and database (Servlets, JSPs, data persistence) and finally on to Web services. In between, the book covers JavaScript, XML and its related technologies, and AJAX.

Parson's running "Insurance Company" example starts out simply enough, but by the time he introduces JSPs and Model 2 MVC architecture, the example has become sufficiently complex to require many .JSP and .java files. Once he shows how to back up the server with a database and use XML on the server, all of the pieces fit together so that no only are the details of web programming at your fingertips, a very appealing high level view of the landscape of web programming is also in front of you.

There is no end to the books and Web resources that address everything from this book in much greater detail. So why this book? First, because it integrates all the topics that it covers, rather than presenting them in great depth but in isolation, and second, because it gives a broad view of the topic at the same time that it pays attention to the important details. As an instructor, I sometimes want my students to see some topics in more detail (for example, XML Schema, or XSLT), but with this book as the foundation, I find it easy to fill in details by sending my students to Web resources.

Readers may not like the fact that Parsons does not use or even discuss any particular Java IDE. Instead, he takes a more bare-bones approach, discussing various Java Enterprise servers, how to do XML configuration for them, and also how to use Ant scripts for compilation, building, and deployment. Since my students are already familiar with the NetBeans IDE, we have taken the IDE approach, and have had no problems creating Java Web projects from the source code on the CD-ROM that accompanies the book. I would also point out that this code does not have the bugs and quirks that often plague accompanying source code.

Kudos to and thanks to Professor Parsons, and I await anything else he can publish along these lines.

The result is an atypical take on Vincent van Gogh that avoids putting too much stress on his troubled mental state and too much straining by the editor to shape a narrative out of van Gogh's epistolary clues. Instead, we see the thoughtful and contemplative side of this creative genius, as well as his concern for the impact his art and life had on those people closest to him.

Van Gogh was 37 and on the edge of fame when, in 1890, he shot and killed himself. Unable to sell his brilliant canvases, he was utterly dependent upon his younger brother, Theo, to whom most of the letters collected here are written. Anguished by loss of faith after planning to be a priest, disappointed in several once-promising love affairs, he was also so tormented by poverty that one of his artistic breakthroughs occurred when, without proper colors, he brushed in "a garden, green by nature, but painted without actual green, nothing but Prussian blue and chrome yellow." Whether van Gogh's suicide was the inevitable culmination of depression, or due to epilepsy or to professional frustration (he is remembered, beyond his pictures, for razoring off part of his ear), his letters reveal that the end was long contemplated. In 1878, he had written to Theo, "It must be good to die in the knowledge that one has done some truthful work." By the time he put a hole in his chest, he knew he had done that. The letters, edited by de Leeuw, the director of the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, echo the artist's passionate voice, and the connective narrative excerpts other letters that readers may regret not having in full. Integral to the letters are 49 pen-and-ink sketches that evidence van Gogh's development into a creative force. Although each letter possesses an inherent pathos because one knows what lies ahead, van Gogh's epistolary appeal goes beyond melodrama. Often inspired by books despite being a limner of peasant life and the land, he once wrote, "How beautiful Shakespeare is, who else is as mysterious as he is; his language and method are like a brush trembling with excitement and ecstasy."

This popular edition of selected Van Gogh letters is based on the expanded four-volume Dutch edition De Brieven van Vincent van Gogh (Van Gogh Museum and SDU, 1990). The translations read smoothly and are more elegant than those found in other editions. Covering an 18-year period, this selection of letters aims to capture the spirit of Van Gogh's life rather than offer up yet another chronicle of facts and opinions. Following the beginning section of early letters, sections are organized chronologically by the geographic locale where Van Gogh lived and worked. Editor De Leeuw provides thoughtful explanations that link many letters and introduce each section. Several reproductions of Van Gogh's drawings accompany appropriate letters. As is often the case with one-sided collections of correspondence, one often wishes that letters sent to Van Gogh were as readily available as his responses to them. For larger art collections.?P. An Intimate Look

I bought this book several years ago in a college bookstore. How fortunate these students were to have been able to read and discuss this with others! I have had a long interest in Van Gogh and found this book to be fascinating, an almost voyeuristic look into his short life. I am glad to see that it is available * * and would hope that people now seeing the traveling Van Gogh portraiture exhibit might read it.
De Leeuw has compiled letters covering over 25 years of Van Gogh's life, letters that offer the reader an intimate look into the artist's thoughts and emotions. He writes about his friendships, his family, his attempts at love affairs, his religious beliefs and questions, and most importantly, about his art. These letters reveal him as anything but the anti-social person often portrayed in the past, with the ones about his relationship with his brother Theo being particularly touching.
Van Gogh was a prolific correspondent and an absolutely wonderful writer. His prose is remarkable--he could have been a writer as well as an artist. These letters shed light on the inner thoughts and the inspiration for his art and show him as a person of great passion and compassion.

The Spirit of a Great Artist

While Vincent van Gogh has always been one of my favorite artists, this compilation of his letters combined with a more in-depth study of his work has intensified my appreciation of him as both an artist and a person. I've always felt it was impossible to separate this particular artist from his work and reading his letters has led me to a better understanding of why this is. These letters beautifully capture his soul and spirit and reveal him as the caring, expressive and socially aware person that he was. The combination of strength of character and vulnerability expressed in these letters explain both the intensity and sensitivity of his work.

"the best way to love God is to love many things"

A very fine collection of the letters, with multiple sides of VVG revealed. To read a collection of letters by an artist whose work you know very well is to invite yourself to take a look at him as a person. As a person, I found that I liked him best in these letters when he was struggling with his religion, his art, and his purpose. I'm glad that Roskill didn't make a selection that focused solely on the more famous and theatrical depressions.
I don't agree that this work reveals Van Gogh as a writer. For me, they definitely confirmed his status as a painter. At his best in these letters, he's painting with words.
Which doesn't make it a less interesting read. I found this a good adjunct to taking a look at the work again, it added an extra dimension to experiencing him as a painter.
Well worth the time it takes.
