The Mediterranean Air War: Airpower and Allied Victory in World War II (Modern War Studies (Hardcover)), by Robert S. Jr. Ehlers

Without what the Allies learned in the Mediterranean air war in 1942–1944, the Normandy landings—and so, perhaps, the Second World War II—would have ended differently. This is one of many lessons of The Mediterranean Air War, the first one-volume history of the vital role of airpower during the three-year struggle for control of the Mediterranean Basin in World War II—and of its significance for the Allied successes in the war's last two years.

Airpower historian Robert S. Ehlers opens his account with an assessment of the pre-war Mediterranean theater, highlighting the ways in which the players' strategic choices, strengths, and shortcomings set the stage for and ultimately shaped the air campaigns over the Middle Sea. Beginning with the Italian invasion of Abyssinia, Ehlers reprises the developing international crisis—initially between Britain and Italy, and finally encompassing France, Germany, the US, other members of the British Commonwealth, and the Balkan countries. He then explores the Mediterranean air war in detail, with close attention to turning points, joint and combined operations, and the campaign's contribution to the larger Allied effort. In particular, his analysis shows how and why the success of Allied airpower in the Mediterranean laid the groundwork for combined-arms victories in the Middle East, the Indian Ocean area, North Africa, and the Atlantic, northwest Europe.

Of grand-strategic importance from the days of Ancient Rome to the Great-Power rivalries of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Middle Sea was no less crucial to the Allied forces and their foes. Here, in the successful offensives in North Africa in 1942 and 1943, the US and the British learned to conduct a coalition air and combined-arms war. Here, in Sicily and Italy in 1943 and 1944, the Allies mastered the logistics of providing air support for huge naval landings and opened a vital second aerial front against the Third Reich, bombing critical oil and transportation targets with great effectiveness. The first full examination of the Mediterranean theater in these critical roles—as a strategic and tactical testing ground for the Allies and as a vital theater of operations in its own right—The Mediterranean Air War fills in a long-missing but vital dimension of the history of World War II.

Review
"Ehlers wields a sharp pen, sparing neither side from criticism. . . . A well-documented, detailed study of a heretofore neglected topic in a neglected theater."—Journal of Military History

"Robert S. Ehlers Jr., is a rising star in the field of airpower history. . . . Most of the Axis’ difficulties resulted from poor strategic choices, a primary focus for Ehlers and a fine analytical structure around which to organize each chapter."—Military History Quarterly

"Robert S. Ehlers has given us another important study of an underappreciated topic. His examination of air power in the Mediterranean theater in the Second World War is far more than a study of aviation in war: it is an analysis of the development and implementation of combined arms warfare, and the leverage it affords when done properly. The book is brimming with insights about command, control, leadership—indeed all the challenges posed by inter-operating military instruments in a theater of war. These insights are just as useful for contemporary practitioners and defense analysts as they are for students of history."—Tami Davis Biddle, author of Rhetoric and Reality in the Air Warfare: The Evolution of British and American Ideas about Strategic Bombing, 1914–1945 and Chair of Aerospace Studies, U.S. Army War College

"Robert Ehlers has assembled a perceptive, skillful, and comprehensive account of the air dimension of World War II’s pivotal Mediterranean campaign."—Douglas Porch, author of The Path to Victory: The Mediterranean Theater in World War II

Excellent, thorough, and well-written history of the Mediterranean Air War
By Koba
This is a very well done history of the Mediterranean air war from the middle of 1940 through the end of the war. Naturally, the majority of the book concerns the struggle in the North African desert, but it also examines Sicily, the Italian campaign, the strategic bombing campaign based in Italy, and the Anglo-American air campaign in the Balkans.

As one would expect, there is considerable discussion of air superiority and close air support. The book shows that the Allies made a determined effort to gain air superiority, and – quite surprisingly – the Germans did not. (The Germans were focused on air support to their ground troops, and generally engaged in air combat only as necessary to protect CAS aircraft.) Possibly surprising to some readers is the Allied emphasis on destroying enemy aircraft on the ground through air attacks on airfields at night as well as Special Air Service ground attacks, both of which destroyed many aircraft and caused significant casualties to ground crews. The loss of air superiority had devastating psychological effects on German forces and also played havoc with German logistics, as Allied aircraft could easily destroy soft-skinned vehicles. Regarding close air support, the author shows how the British started out very weak but improved over time, mainly in the realm of command-and-control. The British rejected dive bombers for close air support; they regarded the Stuka as vulnerable and the fighter-bomber as superior.

I was quite impressed at how well the book covered “other” airpower functions than air superiority and close air support. The author looks at the "foundations" of air power - installations, maintenance and repair, reinforcement (i.e., how each side's aircraft got to the theater), and how each side moved the necessary supplies from rearward bases to forward airfields. These functions are under-appreciated, and it is very clear that the Allies were better at them than the Axis. This had a direct operational impact on the number of aircraft the belligerents were able to put into the air. The book also examines the air-sea campaign - after all, the Mediterranean was a "joint" theater. Again, the Allies were better at this than the Germans, and the Axis neglect of this function was a major lost opportunity. The author examines aerial intelligence, both photographic and electronic (radar).

The author has a generally positive opinion of the strategic air campaign conducted from Italy. The Fifteenth Air Force could reach fighter factories in southern Germany, the Balkan oil fields, and the transportation network of southeastern Europe. He considers that the attacks on oil and transportation had a significant effect in reducing the Wehrmacht’s mobility and facilitating the advance of the Red Army. He argues that the Red Army offensive into Romania in April 1944 failed because the attacks on oil and transportation had not yet taken effect, whereas the Red Army offensive in the autumn of 1944 succeeded after the Allied air attacks had destroyed the German logistical system. The Fifteenth Air Force “assisted the Russian advance in crucial ways, helping to shorten the war and reduce the Grand Alliance’s casualties.”

Ehlers agrees with other authors such as Douglas Porch that the Mediterranean Campaign was not a senseless diversion but played a vital role in Allied victory. Ehlers, of course, highlights the role of airpower in this campaign. From the standpoint of airpower, the Mediterranean Campaign was not peripheral but decisive. In the Mediterranean and due to the attacks of the Fifteenth Air Force, the Axis lost about 20,000 aircraft. In comparison, the Germans lost about 20,000 aircraft in the West and over the Reich, and 11,000 on the Eastern Front.

The author makes many other interesting and insightful points that I won’t discuss here. In conclusion, this is an excellent, thorough, and well-written book that anyone who is interested in World War II will want to read.

The Air War in a Neglected Theatre
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com

'There have been a number of books on the air war in the Mediterranean theatre, but Prof. Ehler (Angelo State) gives us a very good overview of air operations from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean over the entire war, and offers some excellent strategic analysis. To begin with, although still giving the British more attention than the Germans or Italians, Ehlers does a generally better job of looking at the Axis air effort, particularly that of the Luftwaffe. He gives the reader a good mix of the strategic, operational, and at times even tactical aspects of the campaign; taking pains to include the often complex logistical side and fitting the events within the framework of a global coalition war. He argues, rather effectively, that Axis, more specifically German, efforts in the theatre were ultimately frustrated by several strategic blunders, such as failing to take Malta, failing to fully exploit the capture of Crete, and even more importantly, postponing the Mediterranean effort to await the never realized victory in Russia. While Ehler may not settle the argument over the criticality of the Mediterranean in the war, he has certainly made an excellent case for the Middle Sea’s importance.'

A One-Sided View
By Sepp Dietrich
Can we trust a massive well documented work which uses the inflated claims of the RAF and the USAAF against its opponents the Luftwaffe and the Italian Air Force to bolster his thesis that the Allies used the correct principles of air-sea-ground operations? The Author, Robert Ehlers, does a good job covering the top level debates in the use of combined operations and that the RAF discovered the correct principles from 1941 on in the Mediterranean theater of war and that the USAAF copied the strategy and tactics of the RAF eventually while the Axis powers failed to unite their armed forces for the common objective in conquering the the Mediterranean theater and the Middle East. The Western Allies did defeat the Axis forces but it was more a matter of overwhelming military air, sea, and ground forces. The Germans had already defeated the Allies in Western Europe with combined arms, including ground and air, in Poland, Western Europe and the Balkans. The campaign in Norway was the first air, sea, and ground victory so the Germans were well acquainted with combined arms campaigns. The author never even mentions the Norwegian campaign as an influence on the future conduct of the Allies.

When I purchased the book, I was hoping to have a more thorough and complete coverage of the air war in this theater of operations. I was disappointed in this aspect although the coverage of the strategic aspects are also interesting. The lack of coverage of Luftwaffe attacks on Allied shipping is a disappointment, especially since there was no mention of the December 2, 1943 attack by 105 Ju 88s on the Allied port of Bari, Italy where 28 ships were destroyed and another 12 damaged (see Wikipedia for the names of the vessels). Another disappointment was the defeat of British forces in the Aegean Sea in the second half of 1943 which has been called Churchill's Folly. But this would weaked Ehler's thesis that the British and Americans were better than the Germans.

Ehlers uses the exaggerated claims of the Allies to try to prove that the Germans were not as effective in combat as the British and Americans. This includes the claims of the SAS and LRDG. Ehlers states that the latter destroyed 27 German aircraft on the airfield of Wadi Tamat on Dec. 24, 1941. He has the date wrong. It should be the 15th of December. The actual loss was 5 Italian aircraft (See the volumes of Christopher Shores dealing with the Mediterranean Air War).

Ehlers states that on June 17, 1942, the RAF attacked the German airfield at Gazala and destroyed 30 Bf 109s. Nothing could be further from the truth. In actuality one Bf 109 was damaged and another damaged beyond repair.

On Nov. 17, 1942, 37 German aircraft are claimed destroyed at Derna. Actually, the attack occurred at Benina where 12 Axis aircraft are destroyed for the loss of two P-40s. One Bf 109G collided with a P-40 and both are listed in these losses.

USAAF claims are also exaggerated. Ehlers list the Oct. 1, 1943 raid on Wiener Neustadt and he states that more than 25 German fighters are shot down. In actuality, the Luftwaffe lost two Bf 109s (one each from JG 27 and JG 77) for the loss of 13 bombers. Ehlers had also claimed that only three bombers were lost.

Ehlers states that on Nov 3, 1943 in another raid on Wiener Neustadt that more than 50 German fighters were shot down for the loss of 11 bombers. The raid actually occurred on November 2 and only nine fighters were lost by the Luftwaffe.

One last example. The author claims that on Feb. 25, 1944, during Big Week, the 15th AF shot down more than 80 German fighters for
the loss of 32 bombers. The history of the 15th AF by Kevin Mahoney lists the loss on this date of 40 bombers and 4 fighters. The Germans lost 27 fighters (Jochen Prien).

In the 21st century there is no excuse not to use German records. To rely on wartime claims by the Allies is not only inexcusable but unforgiveable. The first clue in the book that Ehlers was using wartime claims was his listing of aircraft destroyed, probably destroyed, and damaged. There is no such category as aircraft probably destroyed in German records. An aircraft is either destroyed or damaged, with the pilot being killed or missing, wounded, or safe. To rely on Allied claims and not recorded German losses is to make this work less than desireable.

On December 12, 1891, 13 rules of a new game were posted in a YMCA gym in Springfield, Massachusetts. At each end of the floor, Dr. James A. Naismith, who had invented the game, had peach baskets nailed below a walkway that happened to be 10-feet high. Within a few days, one of Naismith's students would christen the new game "Basket Ball."

Over a century ago, no one could possibly have envisioned the extraordinary changes that were going to transform Dr. Naismith's game. Who could have imagined a 6-10 George Mikan swatting shots away from the basket? Julius Erving in flight, soaring in from the free throw line for a heart-stopping stuff? Or Bob Cousy throwing a mind-boggling no-look, behind-the-back pass; Jerry West hitting a 60-foot shot with no time left in a crucial playoff game; Larry Bird's three-point prowess and Michael Jordan rising to heights - literally and figuratively - never before seen by any athlete? Who could have foreseen more than 62,000 fans crowded into the Georgia Dome to see a game between the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks? Or the titanic battles between Wilt and Russell? Or the Dream Team? The longevity of Stockton and Malone? Red Auerbach's victory cigars? Phil Jackson's Zen coaching? Or Shaquille O'Neal's powerful dunks? Who could have ever predicted talent like Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Walt Frazier, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Grant Hill, Vince Carter, Jason Kidd, Allen Iverson, and Kobe Bryant?

With an Introduction by NBA Commissioner David J. Stern and a Foreword by Michael Jordan, this third edition of The Official NBA Encyclopedia captures it all: The past and the present. The complete stats and the complex personalities. Dynasties, rivalries, coaches, referees, all the pre-NBA leagues, vignettes and features by the top basketball writers in the world. Every NBA season is reviewed and individual statistics are provided for every player who has ever played in the league. An extraordinary 32-page color photo essay that captures the spirit of the game since Naismith conceived it opens this encyclopedia in an unprecedented and spectacular manner.

From the peach basket to the slam dunk championship - it's all here in The Official NBA Encyclopedia, a book that's almost as exciting as a triple overtime seventh game of the NBA Finals.

From the Inside Flap

Needs To Be More User Friendly
By David Glagovsky
I agonized (for a very short time) whether to rate this third revised edition of the encyclopedia three or four stars and decided on three. The first thing I noticed about this heavy volume is that there is slight difference in the title. The second edition was called "The Official NBA Basketball Encyclopedia"; this edition is simply "The Official NBA Encyclopedia". I suppose the league figured that If you know what the NBA is, the word "Basketball" is superfluous. Just finding the table of contents is a chore. After the title page, instead of a table of contents, there is a 30-page photo essay showing highlights of the league's history. The table of contents follows this opening section, and having to leaf through all the pictures to get to it gets old after the second time. Although this new edition has the same categories of statistical data as the previous edition (updated through the 1999-2000 season), the arrangement of some information is unorthodox. For example, the "NBA Seasons In Review" are presented in reverse order, so the 1999-2000 season is at the front, and you have to work backwards to find the year you are looking for. Fortunately the "All-Time Player Directory", with each player's complete record, lists names in normal alphabetical order. On the plus side, the pages of these two chapters are marked on the edge opposite the binding, so they are easy to find immediately. Besides the NBA, this book also gives comprehensive coverage to the American Basketball Association, which existed for nine seasons (1967-1976). The chapter on "The International Player" has a handy list of all foreign-born players who ever played in the NBA. The biggest disappointment is the section on "The Coaches". There are articles on the top head coaches, including those with over 400 victories in the NBA. However, unlike the official encyclopedias for major league baseball and the National Football League, there is no register for head coaches where one can look up each coach's professional record (this was missing from earlier editions as well). Most people know that Red Auerbach was the longtime head coach of the Boston Celtics (1950-51 through 1965-66). But he also coached the Washington Capitols for three years before coming to the Celtics. The only way to find any coach's won-lost record is to plow through the "All-Time Team Records" at the beginning of chapter 30. I don't think the reader should have to do that. Chapter 30 also has the NBA's all-time individual records for various statistical categories. One statistic I found fascinating was that Wilt Chamberlain scored 50 or more points in 118 games in his career. In second place is Michael Jordan with 30. If the next edition includes a coaches register, I may upgrade my rating.

New Encyclopedia has absolutely everything!
By Erik J. King
The Official NBA Encyclopedia is the best book any hoops fan will ever read. Not only does it hold all the info for the current players, but it holds the complete history of basketball. The NBA, all its seasons, the Draft, International players, coaches, referees, expanding, photos, development, Hall of Fame, and tons of other great stuff are found as well as complete reviews of the ABA,NBL,and ABL. The NBA Seasons in Review is one of my favorite sections. The only negative thing about this book is that the seasons for the NBA are listed backwards. This encyclopedia has every stat for every player that ever played. I love reading this awesome history, and the Official NBA Encyclopedia is the perfect gift for any hoops fan. If I could, I'd give it more than 5 stars.

The authentic version of "The Feminine Mystique"
By Elizabeth O
Only in the last year have I realized "abstinence" is not enough. Chastity and the deep love of self that comes from understanding it have been absent from my radar.

The Everts' book, How to Find Your Soulmate Without Losing Your Soul, fills the void often left open by the traditional "abstinence" teaching. The book is for women of all stages of life and I hereby recommend it to all women.

Check the records, Totus Tuus Press, I was one of the first 100 people to order this book on its debut day. Jason and Crystalina joined Brian Butler to write the Theology of the Body for Teens textbook we use for class, so I continued to refresh the page until the "Add to Cart" icon appeared.

When the beautiful book arrived, I dived in and hardly came up for air. The Everts broke up five years of first hand female accounts, advice, and reasoning into twenty-one short chapters outlining the importance of chastity.

Chastity: this is not your mother's "abstinence" talk. This book peels away the layers of justification, insecurities, excuses, and settling that all women use and face. The Everts compiled a book that walks through the mindset of a woman, trekking through her darkest thoughts on the subjects of romantic love and self-love.

Right off the bat, reading the title of the first chapter, "Missionary Dating," made it clear this was not going to be a softball read.

The chapter followed the air of the Bright Maidens' posts about dating, picking out and detailing ten "types" of guys to avoid dating. Among the no-nos were "The Control Freak," "The Smooth Criminal," and "The Fixer-Upper/Problem Child."

It's so easy to let the camouflage cover those red flags when we get attention we've been craving from a guy. This list helps us see A) if we might be settling and B) why it's not worth it to eat from the dumpster instead of waiting for the banquet.

Jason actually uses this dumpster metaphor in a more elaborate description of how this world convinces us to "just do it" and dive in now without consideration for our decisions' consequences. Later chapters like "Grow a Backbone," "Hang Up on Hookups" and "Wear Something Revealing -- Be Modest," weave this concept into the importance of valuing oneself.

Women are not often convinced of their value, at least not until they change X, Y, and Z.

Mirror, mirror on the wall

"Once I'm thinner, it will be easier to be comfortable around people."
"When I clear up my skin, I won't be as embarrassed to draw attention to myself."
"If I could just be a better singer, I know guys would like me."

The Everts spend the entire book attempting to realign the damage done by these mindsets. Each chapter builds upon the other, teaching lessons of love, value, and constructing a relationship with God.

All the junk filling our minds separates us from the One who created us. Raking out the junk isn't going to happen in the time it takes to read 300 pages, but reading the tough questions and hard pressing examinations in those pages aims to make us ask: Am I getting all that I can out of my life? Am I free?

Jason and Crystalina gave women the authentic version of Feminine Mystique we've been missing. Near the end of the book, they quote Dawn Eden, author of The Thrill of the Chaste and a woman I had the distinct pleasure of meeting. She wrote:

"A woman with the courage to step out into the unknown, risking temporary loneliness for a shot at lasting joy, is more than a "single." She's singular. Instead of defining herself by what she lacks--a relationship with a man--she defines herself by what she has: a relationship with God." (Eden, 22)

"Abstinence" really means nothing if we don't balance our choices with reasoning. It is too easy to fall when we're standing on a pile of sand. Choose to stand on a rock.

As the Venerable John Paul II once said to an audience of students at Eurasia University in 2001, "Be courageous, fear nothing, and you will not be disappointed."

Consider buying a box of 44 books. Don't faint, the publishers are selling this book individually for about $25 or by the case of paperbacks for $2 per book. The $88 box of books could be a fabulous evangelism tool for any girls, young ladies, or women in your life. I know I will find more than 44 girls who need to learn to love themselves, some for the first time.

Lessons in Love
By Jojo from WI
I learned the most important lesson from this book: In a partner, you should find someone who brings you closer to God and strengthens that relationship, not push you away and weaken it. Nowadays, it's hard to find a decent person who has good values, but this book gives you hope. It lets you know that you are not alone feeling like this, and the right person is out there. You just have to have faith.

This book is written to anyone who is single, and to people like me, who are in a relationship, but just need some guidance to know they are on the right path. If I had a teenage daughter, I'd give her this book to read, because it reinforces the moral idea of staying pure and waiting for the right man. If I had a son, I'd want him to read it, because it would teach him how to treat a gal! We definitely need more gents in this world!

Great book! If you are looking at it--don't hesitate--BUY! You will be very happy you did.

Great book worth reading by every woman!!
By Gaby Cardenas
In this book I've found relief and comfort, also the strength to truly believe in what I think is best for me and my future. I learned that love comes naturally, and that I will know exactly when I find the person that God has prepared for me, in every sense. Relationships are not made for solving personal problems, both need to be complete in order to share and still grow learning from each other. I feel now more confident, and I am more willing to let everything in God's hands. Thanks to catholicmatch.com for the advise of getting this book!

Genius on the Edge: The Bizarre Double Life of Dr. William Stewart Halsted, by Gerald Imber MD

Now in paperback, the groundbreaking biography of the most influential surgeon in American history.

“Gerald Imber’s new biography is the first retelling of Halstead’s story in many decades and a particularly expert and thoughtprovoking narrative makes the intense strangeness of Halstead’s subsequent career a gripping story.”

—Abigail Zuger, New York Times Science Section

Dr. William Stewart Halsted’s life was fascinating and complex. Halsted, perhaps the most important surgeon America has ever produced, battled a lifelong cocaine addiction and maintained numerous secret relationships while simultaneously devising revolutionary medical innovations. Yet the story of Halsted’s life, one of seemingly irreconcilable extremes, is in many ways the story of modern medicine.

Before Halsted, poorly-trained doctors performed surgery without anesthesia in unsanitary conditions and patients were rarely expected to survive. Halstead transformed the medical practice by inventing local and spinal anesthesia; introducing the use of rubber gloves during surgery; pioneering the use of fine silk thread for sutures; developing techniques for stabilizing blood pressure during surgery; and inventing the radical mastectomy, blood transfusions, and surgical cures for hernias.

Genius on the Edge is an illuminating biography of a complex and troubled man whose brilliance we continue to benefit
from today.

Clearly an homage to the man to whom “virtually every academically affiliated surgeon can trace his or her teachers,” teaching surgeon Imber’s effort is more than a biography. It is a scholarly reconstruction, complete with historical perspective, of the life of a man who managed to revolutionize surgical practices and, indeed, the entire field of surgery, while battling the enduring and debilitating consequences of self-inflicted medical experimentation. To make surgery more efficient for surgeons, safer, and freer of pain for patients, Halsted began to explore various methods of anesthesia, including the then recently discovered drug, cocaine. He became addicted. Failure to kick that addiction played havoc with his professional life and ultimately forced him to turn optimistically to heroin, generally thought at the time to be an effective treatment. The result was lifelong heroin dependence, despite which he was eventually able to not only function but also continue a brilliant career. Imber’s academic style and inclusive approach are solid but may not appeal to all tastes. --Donna Chavez

Review

"Gerald Imber's new biography is the first retelling of Halsted's story in many decades and a particularly expert and thought-provoking narrative makes the intense strangeness of Halsted's subsequent career a gripping story."--Abigail Zuger, "New York Times "Science section
..".Dr. Gerald Imber's unpredictable and unflappable biography, an intrigue-filled life story that's also a sweeping pop medical history, depicts an individual who was two different kinds of good - make that, great - doctor." --Baltimore Sun
"With this engaging (if spectacularly subtitled) biography, Imber brings into focus the amazing strides medicine has made over 150 years." --Publishers Weekly
"Imber provides a few other colorful details about Halsted: He named his dachshunds "Nip" and "Tuck" and was such an indifferent college student that "there is no record of Halsted ever having borrowed a book from the Yale library." He did crack a book during his senior year: Gray's "Anatomy," which inspired him to pursue medicine." --Washington Post

"A gripping mixture of medical history and detailed biographical analysis.".." "--Huffington Post
"He provides a vivid sense of many "larger-than-life personalities," including those of William Welch, William Osler, Howard Kelly, Harvey Cushing, and Walter Dandy. His powers of description are compelling, and his carefully chosen words seem to let the monumental events speak for themselves. The book is a must-read for residents. The residency of the 21st century is evolving from that of the 20th, but it will be a long time before Halsted's imprint is no longer palpable." --Anesthesiology
"Gerald Imber has captured in one grisly sweep the barbarism of both early surgery and the manure-trodden streets it grew from. Like Doctorow's RAGTIME, it's evocative in broad strokes....Not just for history buffs, Imber gives any reader a character for the ages. Riveting." --Mary Karr, author of "The Liars' Club

A heroic historical page-turner
By Angel Steller
Dr. Gerald Imber will change your views of what it means to be a doctor and a patient, to be sick and to be well. While tracing the convoluted evolution of modern surgery, Imber also chronicles the prodigious, twisted career of the greatest surgeon in American history. As he modernized medicine - introducing such life-sparing novelties as anesthesia, scrubsuits, handwashing, sterlized instruments, even while the medical establishment strenuously resisted his innovations -- Halsted himself descended into a dark, secretive abyss of cocaine abuse and closeted homosexuality. Yet Halsted's techniques and his teaching were so unimpeachably sound, they remain the model for practicing and teaching surgery today. Halsted's story is written with such clarity, it will appeal universally - along the way, Imber's tale encompasses, among other matters, 19th-century American and European history, and some commendably high and lamentably low examples of the human condition. It is a wonder Halsted never had a biography before; we should be very grateful that Dr. Gerald Imber took on this daunting task. His impressive scholarship never gets in the way of good story telling. The charm, humor, and authority of the author's voice shines warmly throughout the sprawling narrative.

Strangely fascinating
By ryan morrison
By far the best biography I have read. I did not have to skip over any boring parts or risk falling asleep. It was strange to realize that not only did people not always use sterile practices but that within the last 100 years people did not use sterile practices. Dr Halsted snd his peers were the creators of modern medicine as we still know it, and their story is a fascinating one.

Fascinating look into how modern surgery developed
By Debbie
"Genius on the Edge" is an interesting book describing the medical developments (especially in surgery) during the period of about 1846 to 1922. The first third of the book mainly focused on what surgery was like before this period, on the developments that occurred from 1846 to 1889, and how they affected Halsted's medical training and prompted his surgical innovations. The rest of the book was more a series of short biographies of men who worked with Halsted and the developments they (and he) brought to the practice of surgery from 1889-1922. It also covered Halsted's marriage and how he lived.

The author didn't assume that the reader was familiar with medical terms and so concisely worked that information in as was needed to understand the innovations. He did an excellent job of making the topic fascinating and easy to understand. I found the book a quick read despite the amount of information packed into it. I also liked how the author wove the general technological changes and social setting into the story so we could see how society effected the advances and how Halsted and the others influenced society in turn. While the book mostly focused on American surgery (especially that done at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine), the author also brought up related advances over in Europe.

There were only a couple of brief descriptions of actual surgery, so most of the book probably wouldn't bother those who get queasy by descriptions of operations.

Some of the topics covered were: the introduction of general anesthetics, heat sterilization, and antiseptics to make surgery safer. How medical training had been done and how it changed (both in medical school and post-graduate) under the influence of Halsted and his friends at Johns Hopkins. The creation of out-patient clinics, the beginnings of bacteriology and the germ theory, the change from quick and brutal surgery to gentle, careful handing during surgery, the introduction of surgical gloves, of using cocaine as a local anesthetic, emergency blood transfusion, surgery of the brain, and much more.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this well-written and interesting book to those interested in how medicine (especially surgery) has developed into what we take for granted today.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.
