Open your mind

I have been reading almost every new erotica book to hit the Amazon shelves for the past 5 years now, and I thought this was a little different take on the norm! If you never liked 50 shades, you probably won’t like Grey - but everything’s worth reading once, so give it a try. Keep in mind this is retelling 50 shades, just a different perspective!

If you’re not in the mood for Grey, there are the novelette options like Dark Petals by Deidre St Luke the up and coming writer.

Lastly, I have read some of the reviews posted and while I am not bashing anyone's opinion I would simply like to point out some facts.
1. This is a retelling of the original story but from Christians POV--therefore how can the author make it be different or original
2. Whereas I did find Christian to be immature and childish in his actions and thoughts those of us who read the original series new this already. His growth didn't come around until after the second book started. Even Dr. Flynn tells Ana that in a lot of ways emotionally Christian is still a child so this is not news.
3. I do believe this book helped to better understand Christian I am not altogether certain it was necessary as the series was already a huge success but just as I am sure with other readers the times I really wanted to know what he was thinking came in book two and three.
For instance when he and Ana marreid, what was on his mind as he and Ros made their way home after Charlie Tango crashed, and I really want into his head the night he confronted Elena at his mother's home.
4. As far as the movie I watched it and believed it to have been as true to the book as was possible for a decent rating. Although I honestly believe that there is NO ONE that could have been picked to play the part of Christian that would have been accepted by all the fans of this series. Each woman as we read FSOG had a mental picture of Christian and everyone's picture would have varied in some way.
Anyway I hope to hear more from Christians POV IN THE FUTURE

50 Yawns of Grey

I apologize, faithful readers. I am one of the hordes of people who clamored for Christian's version of his romance with Anastasia Steele. I begged for it, in fact. I thought his perspective, included at the end of Fifty Shades Freed, was far more captivating than anything Ana had to say.

So when I found out that E.L. James, who clearly recognizes an opportunity when she sees one, was publishing Christian's POV, I was as giddy as a thirteen-year-old at a One Direction concert.

Giddier, even.

And then - AND THEN - I read the book.

The thing about the Fifty Shades juggernaut is that the books, while ridiculously written and unintentionally hilarious, were fun. They were addicting in the worst possible way, and I could not put them down.

Literary crack: you know they're bad for you, but you don't care.

The movie version was better than I thought it would be. Dakota Johnson! I know, right? Who knew? Together with director Sam Taylor Johnson, she gave Ana a much-needed personality injection, emphasizing the virtually nonexistent friskiness of the book. (Jamie Dornan - well, he's gorgeous, and he kind of looks like the Christian I pictured. Here's hoping he loosens up a little in the next one.)

Lately, though, it appears as if E.L. James has started taking herself a wee tad too seriously. First she makes Sam Taylor Johnson so miserable that Johnson backs out from directing the sequel. Then James decides she will commandeer the script and write it herself. I'm waiting for the announcement that she's going to direct, too.

This brings me to Grey, which is just all around a regrettable book.

Here is why I was excited about this one: we get Christian's voice. Let's be honest here for a minute. Do you remember Ana from the books, or do you remember Christian? Which character intrigued you more? CHRISTIAN DID. Ana is about as interesting as a speed bump, but Christian? Christian is glorious. He's complex. He's fascinating. He's utterly compelling. When James tossed out that teaser at the end of Freed, it made me sit up straight and squeeze my thighs together in anticipation.

So much potential.

I won't even address the writing, other than to point out that you will be relieved to know that there are no goddesses or half-moon-glasses-wearing subconsciouses, THANK THE SWEET GHOST OF TWILIGHT. Gone, too, are the apexes of Ana's thighs and the junctures of her thighs, although those have been sadly replaced by Christian's rather clinical usage of "labia." Remaining are the smirking, the eye-rolling, the lip biting, and the sighing.

You just can't keep an eye-rolling, smirking Dom down, I suppose.

Okay, I have to mention such soul-stirring lines as these:

"She's oil on my troubled, deep, dark waters."

"I'm going to make you come like a freight train, baby."

Just ... I mean ... what woman doesn't want to hear THAT?

What I wanted from this book was something new. At the very least, I wanted something FUN. Like the first three. I wanted to revel in the bad writing - biting my lips, smirking, sighing and rolling my eyes right along with Christian and Ana. How about an insight into Christian? Or a different interpretation of the same event, a stimulus to renew my interest in the Copper-Haired Boy Wonder.

What I got was the same damn thing, all over again.

Rinse and repeat.

Yeah, James throws me a few new nuggets. I now know where those Tess of the d'Urbervilles books came from, and I know a lot more about Christian's professional wheeling and dealing than I ever cared to know. There are way too many dreams about his tortured childhood. I kind of got the point after the first two or three, E.L., but thanks for repeating them OVER AND OVER AND OVER again.

There is one scene toward the end - the one in which Ana asks to be punished - that was what I'd call somewhat revelatory. Seeing it through Christian's eyes was pretty darn awesome and far more interesting than any scene that came before it. In fact, that scene triggers James's only true creativity in this book, as we get to see what happens to Christian after Ana walks out on him.

So basically a chapter's worth of interesting reading.

Here's what I realized while reading Grey: Christian's perspective should have been included in the original three books, perhaps in alternating chapters. M. Pierce did this with tremendous potency in the Night Owl trilogy, and it would have served this series well if James had incorporated Christian's POV. I also realized that Christian, for however much this book bored me, remains one of the more commanding (no pun intended) characters I've encountered in fiction. There is something about that man that makes me want more of him.

Now let's talk about the hot headboard rocking. It's delicious. I liked getting in Christian's head as he decided which of his toys to implement, and I liked knowing the sensations he experienced with Ana. There are no new sexual escapades to read about, and those of you who enjoyed The Tampon Scene will be thrilled to know that it makes an appearance.

What you learn from reading Grey is that this is Christian's story to tell. Not Ana's. Yeah, it's supposed to be her Journey of Discovery or whatever, but she's so uninspiring and dull that you don't care. Christian learns more about himself than Ana will ever know about herself, and his changes are far more profound.

Is this the last we will see of Christian Grey in print? I kind of hope so, even as I feel some reluctance at saying goodbye to him. But it's time. Unless E.L. James can give us something new, we need to give Christian a hearty Flogger Salute and send him into the publishing ether.

That being said, this book, which is the EXACT same story as FSOG, only told from Christian's point of view, is the best of the bunch. Christian is a very private person. Reading the story through Ana's eyes, he seems cold and distant. He is anything but. He is trying to please Ana, but he is confused. His dreams reveal so much more about his real mother. It is heartbreaking to know she called him maggot. The dream with Elena is the most revealing. He says he is over Elena, but he thinks of her quite a bit. Ana was a bit whiny to me, but I like her a lot more from Christian's eyes.

>I hope the author will write book 2 and 3 from Christian's point of view. He is fascinating and so unsure of himself! Not until this book, did I realize how distracted he was at work. I wondered how he could invest in a consuming relationship with Ana and still run a successful company, flawlessly.

A must have for radio astronomy enthusiasts

This book is so much fun! Kraus starts with a history of radio astronomy, then moves on the actual science. What was hard in his day, is often easy in ours. The only thing that you will have trouble with is getting an antenna with a large enough aperture. But you can do a lot of great work using satellite dishes.

Great book.....this will keep your fingers turning pages

I enjoyed the book from start to finish the author left me wanting to read more as the main character's life took different twist and turns.....Even though the book is autobiography, If you enjoy suspense filled books this is the book for you. The author leaves you wanting to read more.I hope their is a part two..

Best book I read this year!

This book gave me reality, emotion, suspense and inspiration all in one piece. Once I started reading I could not put this book down! I had many moments where my jaw dropped and I was shocked to say the least. The author walked me through her life and experiences in such a way that I could literally feel her pain, embarrassment, nerves etc. This author has a gift for putting her readers in the story and I am looking forward to her upcoming books. Definitely a great read! Worth every penny!

I really enjoyed this book! I read it for a class and it truly opened my eyes to the many things in our lives that influence our relationships. I am a fan of the authors writing style as she starts off strong and ends even stronger. her ability to take you front and center, with such a poetic flair. I hope she comes out with a part two. Anyone know of other books by this author?

A great idea for a book -- brilliantly written for maximum retention

So... EITHER the idea of writing a book on how companies got their start OR writing in the brilliantly informative and clear style of the authors would be enough to make me enjoy this great business book.

However, the combination, represented here, is really remarkable.

First the concept: read about how some great companies started from a good idea, the roadblocks they encountered, the good decisions (and sometimes bad) they made. This is a great, straightforward concept. You almost never will end up, as an entrepreneur (of which I am one), entirely imitating the path of another company, no matter how successful. This is because of the different variables, such as product line and timing, that are inherent in every business situation. Nonetheless, having these remarkable examples to a) benchmark and b) inspire you is incredibly useful as a pick-me-up, idea generator, and in many cases actual guidebook.

Now, to the style in which this book is written. Many business authors, ironically, aren't actually particularly good writers. On the other hand, some really are good writers, and yet notheless fail to write in a way that maximizes ease of reading and comprehension. Ms. Tice and Mr. Lester, however, have shaped literally every sentence in a way that goes down easy and actually sticks in memory in a very retrievable way. For a business book, that is my highest compliment.

Really Great Information to Stay Encouraged

This is a great read for someone with a great idea and what's involved in bringing it to fruition. I love the writing style of Carol Tice on her pieces because you can envision yourself in the midst of the story and almost feel like you're participating. It opens doors for new ideas, shows the reality of roadblocks and how they can be broken apart, and clearly reveals that if you believe in yourself and what you want to do, it can be done despite the odds. How They Started: How 25 Good Ideas Became Great Companies shares to qualities of true entrepreneurs and their passion to build something from an idea.

The writing is solid, provides great visuals and engages the reader to uncover more ways to make something work. Carol Tice write clear, concise copy that truly inspires. David Kester has organized the book in such a way it's entertaining and fun. The other writers are equally engaging and write solid content that moves you forward to learn more and get you thinking about how you could find new ways to put a spin on an existing idea to make it come alive. And all the articles show how sometimes doing what seems crazy is actually a great way to break through the mold and find a new niche. It's a good read for a brief break, or for an evening of sitting down to absorb some thought-provoking ideas and learn about great success stories.

In an volatile economy, this book is an inspiration to people who want to truly pursue their dreams. Finding innovative ways to get around obstacles makes the idea an even stronger dream. I love the way each idea is established and how each individual is portrayed to pursue the idea to make it a working, profitable company. I refer back to these stories often for my clients, to find new ways to present their information and give them ideas on how to overcome obstacles. It's an encouragement to someone looking for work in a difficult economy, and an inspiration to someone who wants to start over. I recommend this book to anyone whether you want a quick read, a reference book, and inspiring compilation of success stories or simply an overview of how one or two people made a difference for millions. You won't be disappointed.

Insightful Stories for Would-be Entrepreneurs, Businesspeople

If you have a stack of untouched "how to" business books gathering dust on your nightstand (like I do), then "How They Started" is the perfect read: it's short, smartly written and won't put you go to sleep.

Focusing on 25 American companies, from famous Internet start-ups like Google, Ebay, and Twitter, to more established names like Coca-Cola, IBM, and Walt Disney Company, the book tells insightful, entertaining stories of how these businesses started and what made them successful. All have one thing in common: they started with a great idea. Some of the founders had financial resources, many didn't; some were college drop-outs or by-passed college altogether. All had chutzpah. For example: Sara Blakely, founder of SPANX, a women's shapewear manufacturer, got her first big order by modeling the undergarments herself for a Neiman-Marcus buyer; Stephen Kaufer started TripAdvisor because he wanted honest advice about where to go on vacation; and Whole Foods founder John Mackey pioneered retail sales of organic food in beef-centric Texas, in the early 1980s.

Each chapter features a different company, with a profile of the founder(s), age(s), education and where they're from. The chapter continues with the story of how the business started, finishing with a summary of where the company is now.

"How They Started" is entertaining and informative -- though I got bogged down by tech-speak in a few chapters. For entrepreneurs seeking additional inspiration as well as readers interested in a behind-the-scenes look at American business, it's a good read, packaged in an entertaining, easy-to-read format.

Great set for a great mind.

Any book on positive thinking is an amazing book for me ! This one in particular is very well written and managed to show me very interesting key points on how to achieve on all the aspects of my life. I keep a very strong sense of positivism and I believe that is something that helps me accomplish great things, and this book recognizes that. The book about meditation was very good, but not that clear to me. I have to put all my mind in to accomplish the amazing thing meditation can do. Invoking the words and spirit of Thomas Paine, investor-turned-historian John Bogle concedes that his ideas for revamping the mutual-fund industry are perhaps "not yet sufficiently fashionable to procure them general favor." But despite likening the "ills and injustices suffered by mutual fund investors" to those "our forebears suffered under English tyranny," Bogle--founder of the Vanguard Group--makes a strong case for index funds with this exhaustive study of investing.

He begins with primer-like essays on investment strategy, championing mutual funds for their inherent investment value, and then grinding each point home with a bevy of graphs, charts, entertaining anecdotes, and common sense. He repeatedly stresses time as a basic tenet for investing, listing these simple rules: "Time is your friend"; "Impulse is your enemy"; "Stay the course." And then he proceeds to blast fund managers, who have become marketers rather than managers. The trade-off between the profits that accrue to fund shareholders and the profits that accrue to the fund management companies seems subject to no effective independent watchdog or balance wheel, despite the fact that the shareholders actually own the mutual funds. It's an interesting concept: smart, reasoned investors can all but secure their financial future, but the system itself, run unchecked by fund managers, needs a major overhaul. And considering the amount of reasoned, historically based support he includes, readers will have a hard time finding fault with the sometimes controversial Bogle. A Buy Buy Buy

Although I have investment experience , I really enjoyed book and have recommended it to folks
that don't have a clue when it comes investing in the stock market. But this book may be a bit too much for them.

Instead it may be a more appropriate read to those with some investment experience.

However, John Boggle really is a revolutionary when it comes deconstructing the myths of investing.

And thats critical because the industry is designed to make investing confusing and complicated. Hence people thinki they
need an investment advisor to guide them. Unless you have very complicated portfolio, index or passive investing in time, is
a winning proposition when it comes to participating in an amazing wealth generating program.

The fact of the matter is less 5% of all active money management manager beet the market. The question is.. if you don't know who the 5% of professional are who beat the market , you're going to spend time and money on people that can't beat index investing.

Boggle is truly a visionary and had to take a lot of heat from the industry stating that his system of indexing is never going to build a portfolio large enough to make difference in one's financing future.

Fortunately he has proven all of the naysayers wrong.

You may have to read certain sections twice or so yet if you want to be in the stock market, you can pick up
the basic concepts and general terms to begin taking control of your financial future.

Do it yourself, don't hire a financial advisor

People say that investing is complex and confusing and that you need to hire a financial advisor to help you on investing your money for a comfortable retirement. After reading this book, I found that much of what you hear from the financial industry is wrong and is designed to confuse the retail investor. The truth of the matter is that investing your money is not complex and that you do not need a financial advisor. If you listen and follow the advise from much of the professional investor class about where you should put your money, you would be making them rich at the expense of your savings. John Bogle is doing us retail investor's much needed truth about how to manage your money and has the roadmap and proof to tell us, what most others in the industry has long kept silent and a secret. The truth to investing is that it is not secret, do it yourself, it is not complex, and don't listen to the advise of professional portfolio managers who are out to take your money while pretending to have your back, they don't because it is at their expense. Go with Bogle's folly, read the book, and follow the wisdom in it, and you will do better than 96% of all funds managed by the portfolio managers.

sometimes simplicity must be exhaustively explained to be believed

this is *the* book to read on mutual funds. it's a hefty tome coming in at 600+ pages, but fear not. this book does not read like a dry financial report. bogle is opinionated and his writing flourishes with reminders of his personality amidst the endless but important charts and tables. to spice things up, bogle makes references to a wide variety of sources including shakespeare, thomas paine, scripture and even hegel! by the time you're done, you'll know *everything* you've ever wanted to know (and more) about the mutual fund industry, all straight from the founder of the vanguard group himself. for those afraid of the size of this book, perhaps check out bogle's "little book of common sense investing" instead and then come back to this book if you want more details.

bogle's main message is that costs do matter and simplicity is the best way to avoid costs. the recommendation is to buy low cost broad-based index funds that will outperform the vast majority of actively managed mutual funds in the long run. notice by the definition of "average" that the average investor will get average market returns minus fees and taxes. notice the low cost broad-based index fund gets average market returns minus *minimized* fees and taxes. the index investor will thus outperform the average investor in actively managed mutual funds given all the extra costs associated with active management. also notice that the margin of victory from indexing will compound over the years and will lead to an even greater index fund performance in the long run. that's the gist of why indexing works. if you're not convinced, read bogle's book!

even if you've already read some of the other great passive investing books espousing the virtues of indexing, you still owe it to yourself to read at least one of bogle's books. "common sense on mutual funds" is both readable as well as comprehensive, and would be a good addition to your library. burton malkiel, rick ferri, william bernstein, larry swedroe and others have all written excellent books on the subject as well, but they also hold differing opinions on the specifics, so read all of these authors! i was already convinced on indexing after first reading malkiel's book, but continued reading more on passive investing to work out all the details. these books as a whole help reinforce the main ideas while also exposing the reader to the authors' differences in perspectives, thus building confidence in the reader to think and succeed as an independent d.i.y. investor.

of particular interest to me was the issue of small-cap value tilting. i was ambivalent on this practice, but bogle's book convinced me to *not* small-cap value tilt. readers who already know what small-cap value tilting is should feel free to skip to the next paragraph. now, for those unfamiliar with the terminology, stocks are divided according to size (small-cap, mid-cap, large-cap) as well as style (value, blend, growth). the size refers to the company's size as measured by its market capitalization, i.e. the number of shares multiplied by the price per share. the style is another way to partition stocks according to certain numbers such as price/book ratios and dividend yields; there's no agreed upon standard that's universally accepted for what constitutes a value/blend/growth stock. informally, you could think of value stocks as those that are not currently favored by the market for whatever reason. at the opposite extreme, growth stocks are "hot" stocks that scream potential. blend stocks are in between value and growth. given 3 sizes and 3 styles, there are thus 9 size-style combinations. according to research done by professors fama and french, small-cap value stocks significantly outperform the other 8 size-style combinations in the long run. the problem is, small-cap value stocks make up about 3% of the total stock market. small-cap value tilting means overloading on small-cap value stocks to try to capture the bonus identified in the fama/french research, but that also means underweighting 97% of the total market and potentially missing out if the other 8 size-style combinations outperform small-cap value. you see the dilemma.

bogle's repeated message of simplicity, as well as his emphasis on reversion to the mean, ultimately convinced me to resist the temptation of small-cap value tilting. bogle's unwavering conviction in the simple serves as a necessary component in the chorus of voices, helping to guide your investment decisions, even on the more esoteric matters. and although the message of simplicity is easily stated, i am glad bogle wrote a comprehensive text because the details illustrating the majesty of simplicity is what finally settled the small-cap value tilting question for me.

this book's huge size and scope definitely has its drawbacks, not the least of which is the sheer intimidation factor. nevertheless, i believe this book does serve a useful role in the catalog of passive investing, and bogle was the only one who could've written it.
