About the Author

Wendy Dunn is the James Y. Canfield Professor of Psychology at Coe College. Wendy majored in biology and psychology at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she also worked at the National Animal Disease Laboratory. She earned a master’s degree, also at Iowa State, in experimental psychology. Taking a break from education, she next worked at a nationally-known marketing research firm, but ultimately decided that teaching undergraduates was her true passion. She subsequently earned two doctoral degrees from the University of Iowa, one in educational psychology and, supported by Coe College, a second in management and organizations. Wendy’s diverse career interests have led her, at various times, to serve in administrative, as well as teaching roles at Coe. She worked for a time as Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, and she currently holds a joint appointment as Professor and Director of Institutional Research and Planning at Coe. Although Wendy has published her research in major journals and is an author of three texts in the field of psychology, her true love is teaching, and it is this activity that gives her the most pleasure. Students consistently comment on Wendy’s ability to inspire their curiosity about human nature, and they have honored her by electing her to receive the colleges’ highest teaching recognition – the C. J. Lynch award for outstanding teaching. Wendy has been married to Greg for 37 years, and together they have raised two children – as such, like all of us, her interest in human development is personal as well as professional.

Grace Craig is Professor Emerita at the University of Massachusetts, at Amherst. Currently, she is semi-retired from the Child, Family and Schools program, teaching specialty seminars intermittently. Grace completed her B.A. in Sociology, with honors in Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, and her MS and PhD there in Child and Educational Psychology with minors in Clinical Psychology and in Research methods. She took time out for 2 years along the way to practice School Psychology in western Massachusetts She began her academic career as a Lecturer, for 4 years, in the Psychology Department at Smith College, in the late 1960s, -- a time of reassessment in the social sciences and in the society at large. Grace has been married to Ralph Craig for 53 years and together they have one daughter and one grandson.

In regards to the auction: Item exactly as described, Fast Shipping, Overall Happy with transaction!! I would recommend.
In regards to the book: This book has been so much better than the required reading for Psychology 150 (101 for some), This book is user friendly. The language is easy to understand, the information is well organized, the end of chapter tests & summaries are also very helpful. My only complaint with this book which I suppose has more to do with the publisher is the inability to use the "My Psych Lab" tool. I feel that I spent extra money for this copy of the book because I wanted to be able to use the "My Psych Lab" tool and I am not able to do so. I feel like I spent more money than was necessary and these books are so very expensive to begin with so BUYER BEWARE!!! If you can ask your instructor ahead of time about the "My Psych Lab" tool I would because if I were able to go back & purchase this book again I certainly would not spend the extra money for this particular copy.

I hadn't enjoyed Lucy Moore's previous book, 'The Thieves' Opera'. I only decided to give 'Liberty' a try because of my interest in the women it portrayed. And I'm glad I gave the author a second chance --- this book is nothing short of gorgeous.

What could an unhappy ex-prostitute like Théroigne de Méricourt have in common with a prim bourgeoise like Manon Roland? Or the decadent, pleasure-loving Thérèse Tallien with the sharp and intellectual Germaine de Staël? Well, all these women lived in times of great upheaval and social change, and the French Revolution, from its optimistic beginnings to the savagery of the Terror, molded their psyches and shaped their fates.

Perhaps inevitably, some of the women are more vividly portrayed and get more attention than others. Manon Roland wrote her memoirs in prison, knowing she wouldn't survive the Jacobins' murderous frenzy, and with the aim of setting posterity right. Germaine de Staël, ferociously intelligent, was a novelist and prolific letter-writer. At the other end of the scope, the life of the vociferous sans-culotte girl Pauline Léon is much less documented, and consequently she didn't come alive for me the way the others did.

Perhaps the most tragic of the six women portrayed in the book is Théroigne, who always yearned for, but never found, true and nurturing love, was misunderstood by most of her contemporaries, and ended her days in a mental asylum, mumbling to herself about liberty and civil rights. And this is one of the main themes Lucy Moore illuminates in her book --- how the (mostly male) leaders of the French Revolution systematically and deliberately neglected the issue of women's rights, and how females, thousands of whom mounted the scaffold, were not, in spite of that, allowed to mount the rostrum.

All in all, an interesting and fast-paced book about six very different women, against the dramatic backdrop of the momentous times when everything changed forever. For those interested in the subject, I also recommend Marilyn Yalom's 'Blood Sisters', another fascinating study of women in the French Revolution.

Antoine de Cordorcet wrote in 1790, Page 61 (my book)

“He who votes against the rights of another, whatever that person’s religion, colour or sex may be, has by the same token forsworn his own. Why should creatures subject to pregnancies and to passing indispositions not be able to exercise their rights.”

Now if everything would have been as was written in this quote surely we would have had a wonderful France in the 1790’s. But sadly, the French Revolution did not live up to these ideals.

Many women were able to speak out for their rights, as is well depicted by this book. They wanted the full rights of being a citizen – but citizen meant “citoyen”, not “citoyenne”. The French Revolution was in some part influenced by the ideals of Rousseau who was hardly for the emancipation of women. But many women read Rousseau and Voltaire, and came to differing conclusions. Rousseau wrote that “Men is born free, but is everywhere in chains.” In this case “men” was interpreted as encompassing both male and female. Voltaire was a skeptic and believed in the power of the intellect.

The author points out that many in the revolution wanted women to return to their traditional role as nurturers. Marie Antoinette was seen as decadent, depraved and unnatural – and a part of the aristocracy which had to be obliterated. Robespierre was an extreme misogynist and never married, nevertheless many women admired him. The Revolution self-destructed in its quest for purity – and the military, under Napoleon took control. Napoleon was another misogynist who had traditional views on women.

Women were equally condemned for being over-sexed (Marie Antoinette) or under-sexed. There are many wonderful descriptions of several incidents during the revolution. One is of Charlotte Corday (under-sexed, apparently a virgin) who at the age of 25 murdered Marat, a fanatical writer for the “ideals” of the Revolution. Charlotte paid the ultimate price – she was guillotined. Theresa Cabarrus (over-sexed) was out-spoken, had many lovers and introduced new, and sometimes revealing, fashions.

This book needed to be streamlined. There are just too many characters introduced on every page. It made reading confusing. It’s interesting because, how could the French Revolution, with all its ideas, characters and colliding events not be engaging. Sometimes I felt unsure of what the author was trying to convey. I think it would have been better to focus on how the French Revolution changed the role of women in society. With the attention given to aristocratic/bourgeois women we get little feel of how the masses of poor, illiterate women were faring.

This book is wonderful and so full of truth. Like one of her other books, Awakening The Genie Within, the size of the book is in no way equal to the information inside. Her insight is so needed at this time. It is a must read for any who seek truth not dogma.

Great overview of the Bible and other knowledge.

Bettye has a remarkable way of pulling info together, presenting possibilities and pushing the limits of "Why you believe what you believe!" I was privy to this info but needed to see it from a different perspective. It is an overview and some research has to be done by the reader to fully appreciate the work this women has done and how credible it is.
For me I have walked away from organized religion for the very reasons of inconsistent knowledge and good common sense. Bettye nails the very foundation of "Who we are, Why are we here and Where are we going?"
I highly recommended her other books and also, "Slave Species of the GODS" by Michael Tellinger to further you along on this well kept secret that is now going public. Enjoy!

Fun and quirky

Granted, this series owes a debt to a certain actor who has become synonymous with the character of Loki (*cough* Tom Hiddleston*). The reborn mischief maker is working for the All-Mother, so he has to curb his urge for total badness. Sort of. Of course, in issue #1, he has to run across the Avengers to get his assignment done.
Loki also gets the kind of art treatment that used to be reserved only for female characters in comics: a shower scene.
Someone at Marvel is aware that "fangirls be buyin'." Don't let this bit of fan service dissuade you from reading it, however.
The funny bits really are funny, with the kind of snappy dialogue that you would expect to hear flying out of Hiddleston's mouth on-screen. So far, the book is a fun and quirky little read, and I hope there's more good stuff to come.

Best 21 pages of comics in 2014, but spoiled by page 22

The first twenty-one pages of this comic are probably the finest I have read in a long time; however the last page utterly ruins it. This is going to be another one of those reviews with a massive spoiler in it and it is why I have left it a week before writing it in the hopes that most people will have read it by now. Marvel have done this a lot recently; they have worked out a really good formula for how all the characters should act and how they should interact, but it is the over arching plot that is intrinsically flawed. It feels like you are watching a film with the tightest dialogue and fantastic characters, but realise that the entire plot has been written by a five year old.

Loki is back, no, not that Loki, the young one; actually, not even that Loki, it is the one in the middle. Yes, sorry for that last sentence sometimes continuity is a ‘female dog.’ Loki was killed, became a woman, then a young boy and after ‘borrowing’ some magic from Wiccan has settled on a body that is somewhere in the 18-25 range. Anyone think they have heard this before? I do wonder sometimes if DC actually have it right with their ‘hard reboot’ of their universes, all this constant tweaking and de-aging by the back door of characters is starting to feel a bit repetitive. The irony is Loki is a god, he will not die or age even if the Marvel universe continues on for another 1000 years. But anyway, here it is, the Tom Hiddleston version of Loki. I know that may sound cynical but when you consider Nick Fury was ‘replaced’ by his ‘son’ who is simply Sam Jackson and has only been seen since in flash backs you start to notice a pattern occurring.

This is all sounding horribly negative, but this is part of what I was trying to explain. The entire concept around this comic for me is broken before it even starts, but if you can ignore that then the body of the comic is simply fantastic. For all of you who complain about the female form being flaunted in comics, there is definitely a scene here for the ladies. After a dramatic cold opening the book starts with Loki in the shower with only speech bubbles covering his modesty. The perverse part of my mind actually wonders if the artist drew him anatomically correct before the bubble was put in place, but fortunately it is something we do not have to find out. It turns out that the young Loki is somewhat back in favour at the Asgardian Court and they have enlisted him to perform a mission of the utmost importance.

To be honest, it could turn out to be a fantastic story plot and the rest of the series will be wonderful despite of it, but the problem for me is that I am just fed up with the same story notes being used over and over again. More importantly, the same story concept repeated in such a short space of time. Go back and reuse a good idea from the 70s, that is fine, most people will not have even read it, but reusing ideas from 2012 and one that was only just done in a cancelled series last year and an ongoing series this year just means that this feels reused and a little trite.

The first 21 pages of this book are right up there with the best I have read in modern Marvel comics, but the last page spoils it all for me. So my suggestion, just count the pages in the comic and pull out the last one before you read it. You will

But I ordered this because I love Loki and yeah I'll buy into the Marvel Universe. It really is a beautiful thing and came wrapped in plastic. I kind of wish I had bought comics before. This is fun!

Dialogue is important. This book helps you get it right.

Note: I use the Goodreads star rating, so my four-stars mean that I really liked this book, but it wasn't flawless.

I was asked by the author to beta-read an earlier edition of this book, and then I re-read the final published version.

I've read a few of Rayne Hall's Writer's Craft books before, and I've always been suitably impressed. This one is no different. It's filled with practical advice, written in plain English, and uses lots of examples.

This book is a veritable gold mine of information, and in fact, I've already implemented a few of these tips in some stories I've written since reading it. I particularly liked the idea that dialogue should SOUND real, but the way people talk in real-life really isn't suitable for fiction. So, it must FEEL real, but it must not BE real.

Another thing that really stuck with me was the section on how to write people of different dialects. Lots of authors go overboard, writing each word of dialogue exactly as it sounds, which gets really frustrating to a reader who isn't a native speaker of that dialect. Other authors don't change the way those characters speak at all, which makes the characters seem bland and uninteresting. In this book, Rayne Hall gives a very nice compromise.

In truth, there weren't many chapters that I didn't find useful, from the chapter on body language, to the differences between the ways men and women speak, to advice on how to write flirtatious encounters. The list goes on and on.

This is a valuable resource for any author whose stories contain conversations between characters - and I can't think of any that don't. Dialogue is an important part of any story; you should really get it right.

Another Must Have Craft Book For Writer's Resources

Another hit by Rayne Hall. I have all of this author's craft books and I will continue to buy them as long as she writes them. They are quick reads, but they never fail to to teach me something new. I keep them in a special Kindle folder designated as my "Go To Writing Craft Resources", for when I need help writing my novel. Actually it's called my Fiction Writer's Toolbox. I keep only a limited number of books in that folder including Hall's entire series, along with Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi's Emotional Thesaurus Series and a few others. I love the way Hall writes her series and Writing Vivid Dialogue is no exception. I learn best by example and she uses a plethora of examples to demonstrate how we can improve our dialogue. As advertised, this book is not for beginners and the author assumes the reader already mastered the basics of writing dialogue. This book is designed to take your dialogue to the next level and believe me, if you follow Hall's tips and do the exercises it will. She teaches you how to write fast paced, edgy, mysterious, dialogue that compels readers to turn the page, eager to read on and find out what will happen next.

Writing Vivid Dialogue will help you write distinctive character dialogue, add tension to your dialogue and improve your overall story. I highly recommend this book to all writers. I further recommend that you actually perform the writing exercises in the book. This book can help you with your first draft or with a revised draft. I'm doing the exercises now as I work on revisions and comparing my dialogue to the before scenes and it is amazing how much my "after" dialogue scenes sizzle. I truly hear the difference and can't thank Rayne Hall enough. I was familiar with some of the techniques Hall uses, but the way she demonstrated them made it come alive for me. I already knew that answering a question with a question or avoiding the answer created tension, but having someone actually walk you through it with examples makes all the difference in the world. This is only two of a dozen or so methods the author uses for creating tension. I won't go into all of them, but she taught me quite a few new tricks and I am most grateful.

First rate guide for novices and old hands

If you've won a Pulitzer, the Man Booker or sold a million books, you don't need this guide. For the rest of us, it's an excellent reference.

Hall addresses quickly and clearly all those dialogue craft items we tend to overlook or forget in the heat of creation. She covers some standard issues like use of Dialogue Tags and Dialogue Punctuation, but she also gets into the tricks that can make dialogue sing. Use of Questions instead of Statements, defining each character's agenda and translating that into the way they speak, how liars can be outed through speech and body language. She covers a wide range of techniques, as well as addressing Types of Fiction (Historical, Sci-Fi, etc.) and associated dialogue, jargon, foreign words, and other special situations.

He writing is clear, absent a lot of theory, and easily accessible as a checklist if you're revising. One of the most useful How-To books on writing craft I've seen recently.
