It is clear that this is a most welcome, challenging and insightful book, which is undoubtedly required reading for anyone interested in the processes of morphosyntactic change. Graeme Trousdale, Folia Linguistica I found Fischer's evaluation of grammaticalization theory enlightening...work is ambitious, wide ranging undertaking, and is a valuable contribution to the limited but growing body of research that works towards bringing together teo seemingly disparate approaches to language change. Johanna L. Wood Diachronica ...an important book that deserves critical reading and careful thought. It will bring to a higher level current debates on analogy, gradualness, gradience, constuctions, and chunks of linguistic materials. Elizabeth Cross Thraugott Functions of Languages

About the Author
Olga Fischer is Professor of Germanic Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam, where her Ph.D. thesis Syntactic Change and Causation: Developments in Infinitival Constructions in English was accepted in 1990. She is a contributor to the Cambridge History of the English Language (C.U.P. 1992), co-author of The Syntax of Early English (C.U.P. 2000), and co-editor of Form Miming Meaning and Pathways of Change (Benjamins 2000 and 2001).

I bought Cracking the TOEFL IBT with Audio CD, 2009 Edition (College Test Prep)( Princeton Review) and Kaplan TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM 2008-2009 (Kaplan Toefl Ibt) .i read both of them for one month and passed the ibt by 97. This is what I think about these two books on all four part of ibt:
Princeton Review
Reading 3 out of 5: good strategies but the readings are simpler than the real exam
Writing 5 out of 5: great strategies and samples with good drills
Speaking 4 out of 5: good strategies and drills but difficult to use on exam
Listening 4 out of 5: good strategies and sample but limited number
Overall 4 out of 5: the most important negative point is that it comes only with audio cd and you can not experience the real exam condition.
Kaplan
Reading 5 out of 5: great strategies and samples
Writing 2 out of 5: some useful techniques but not so helpful
Speaking 2 out of 5: some useful techniques but too general
Listening 4 out of 5: good strategies and examples
Overall 3.5 out of 5: the most important positive point is that you can create the real exam condition by its cd-rom at home.

Perfect study guide...

i bought this book for my 2009 TOEFL IBT and after studying it and following its strategies, i was convinced that i was well prepared for the test, studied for 5weeks and got 100 out of 120. Now basically if you are expecting this book to teach you English language and grammar completely, you are mistaken, this is just a guide on how to excel on the test, a perfect one i must say, your general performance on a language is based on lifetime practice; constant reading, writing and speaking the language, but regarding the test, this is a blueprint on how to pass the TOEFL IBT.

Helpful on my toefl test!

this was a good book to get strategies on how to answer during the exam. my score improved from 86 to 110. the reading practice tests were easier than the actual test though. listening, writing, and speaking practice tests were very helpful. i liked the cracking section since i learned techniques on how to answer fast, but surely. i only have 1.5 hour to read 4 passages with minimum of 5 paragraphs plus answer 56 questions on the reading. the techniques the book taught me helped me a lot on how to be able to maximize my time. i liked how you only read parts from the paragraphs then go to the questions immediately so you will not run out of time. also, the tips it gave to answer the summary question, which are worth 2 points, were also very helpful since i found that confusing. i liked the practice tests for the listening part since they are similar to the actual test. the audio CD that comes with it will be very helpful on this part (and also with the speaking section). in the writing, i only focused on the techniques they give on how you will develop the paragraphs. then most importantly the speaking section... i focused on this more since it was my lowest on my first attempt on toefl. the only thing is that you have to time yourself, which i did.

PS (i also used the barron's practice tests (the program, not the book) for the speaking, which i find more helpful since it tries to give you a feel of the actual test and it does the timing for you. i also recommend using the speaking and writing strategies by bruce stirling. the technique it gave helped me score 28/30 for both writing and speaking.)

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Spillover, Quammen’s comprehensive book about zoonoses, was one of the best books I read last year. So, when I noticed he’d published another book, entitled Ebola: The Natural and Human History of a Deadly Virus, I immediately ordered it from our local library, read it, and realized it was almost entirely a reprint of the Ebola chapter from Spillover!

Now I'm wishing I’d have read the author’s blog (which I did, just now…grrr) before getting fooled again. I take full responsibility the second time around (feeling...chagrined) but am still bummed. At least the Ebola book had the teensiest of changes, this one is, admittedly (by the author in this excerpt from his blog),

“Zoonotic diseases are the subject of my 2012 book Spillover—a work mainly devoted to the ecology and evolution of scary viruses—from which I extracted and reshaped sections to produce a little 2014 book,Ebola: The Natural and Human History of a Deadly Virus. I’ve now done the same thing (at the suggestion of W. W. Norton) with the long AIDS chapter from Spillover, in order to offer it too as a short, stand-alone book.”

I confess, even though he added nothing to what he’d published on the subject in Spillover, I found it fascinating even the second time around, reading along obliviously, in hopes he'd new information. My one complaint (besides the fact that he’s now twice published portions of Spillover as stand-alone books), would be the short historical fiction part of the story where Quammen includes a play by play of what could have happened that would support the “cut hunter” theory. Nearly all, some, or none of that may be true, which is why I am not a fan of the genre, even when included within an otherwise true story.

My advice: read Spillover (and skip the excerpt books!). The additional information gained is well worth the additional time and effort. You might also like: The Hot Zone by Richard Preston, Fever! The Hunt for a New Killer Virus by John G. Fuller and World War Z: The Zombie War by Max Brooks (I recommend the audio version of this one).

Mind blowing!

Read this book in two days! Absolutely fascinating! I had read Edward Hoopers book "The River: A Journey to the Source of HIV and AIDS" which gives account to the possible origins of HIV to the polio vaccine campaign conduced in Africa, but David Quammen's book investigates further. I don't want to spoil this book, but I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested with the origins of HIV and how it has become one of the biggest pandemics known to man. Wonderful book!

Glossy overview of the history of HIV

Quick read about the history of HIV. I didn't quite realize before purchasing (although I think it's clear, I just didn't pay attention) that this is taken from another of his books. He references that a few times in this book, and glosses over some details that I think must be explained in further detail in the larger work. I would have liked to see more discussion of some of the biology, as he does often skip the details of how exactly how the microbiologists have derived their findings. Also, be warned that a good chunk of the middle of the book is pure speculation about the Cut Hunter hypothesis and how the virus may have spread to other humans from the Cut Hunter. That was a bit disappointing from a science writer.

If you are looking for an easy to read introduction into how scientists trace zoonotic diseases, this will be a great book for you! If you want something more in-depth, I would suggest reading Spillover or Pepin's more in-depth book.

Empty rhetoric

Many years ago, in the land of the B and D trains, a now-deceased, but then very much alive and cogent rabbi told me: you can either be a rabbi or a marriage counselor. But the roles are entirely different, the agendas are different, and the goals are different.

If you try to be both, you succeed at neither.
This book proves him right. It is a collection of "for Torah people" bits of advice on family life that have as much relevance to the problems that couples endure as the periodic table has to a chart of vitamins. It presupposes that everyone is just perfect (but slightly misunderstood); it relies on homilies rather than truths, and defies the truth of modern (or even middle-age) life.

For the pious (man), you're better off reading some Talmud and then going home and just apologizing; for the pious woman - he's not going to change, just get used to it.

I have read self help books, big fan of audible - read most things out there on peace of mind, happiness - both in the religious (Judaica) - other religious and secular world - THIS IS THE ONE!!!! This book presents a formula for basic success in life and Peace of Mind that is so basic, and so transformative that there is pretty much no way it can't change your life for the positive - who can be happy if they don't have peace of mind - we all wait for reality in life to get to a point where Peace of Mind happens - this book shows you how to achieve peace of mind and let that fuel your happiness and entire perspective on what you want out of life. The author is working on a generic book for anyone (singles, etc.) but despite the title related to marriage I can assure you this book is far reaching and deals very focused on once you have built in peace of mind and self control, happiness and compassion and gracefulness follow - and marriage and ALL of your relationships improve dramatically. Don't know of a more important book you could find - If there were extra stars I would give it at least 10/5.

Shockingly valuable and far reaching

The observations and guidance that Mr. Ostrov has identified in his book, reach far wider than marriage. He is humble about his knowledge, and is thus much more trustworthy than the usual sales pitch. He gives real tools, instead of using his book as a springboard for selling other items and office visits. His tools start working immediately, and are deeply insightful. I love how he gives his references, and explains the ancient thoughts behind his observations. He also is very open to marrying modern psychology with ancient jewish philosophical observations tested over eons. While this book comes from deep inside the orthodox jewish community, the knowledge and insights could be valuable to so many. (As my friend said, when I mentioned that I wanted to send the book to someone else: "Are you trying to acheive world peace by getting his book out?!" My friend and I were both astonished at how he "hit the nail on the head", then gives specific management instructions. After 15 years of seeking professional guidance through several relations, I believe I have found a profesional with the guidance of thousands of years and repeated testing and observations behind him, and the humility and clarity to write a truly helpful book. One example: Everyone says that being happy is a choice, and that you just have to "think positive". All of us who have tried and failed, know that that simplicity is nonsense. And he agrees. He teaches how to filter. This is the REAL "The Secret".
