The authentic version of "The Feminine Mystique"

Only in the last year have I realized "abstinence" is not enough. Chastity and the deep love of self that comes from understanding it have been absent from my radar.

The Everts' book, How to Find Your Soulmate Without Losing Your Soul, fills the void often left open by the traditional "abstinence" teaching. The book is for women of all stages of life and I hereby recommend it to all women.

Check the records, Totus Tuus Press, I was one of the first 100 people to order this book on its debut day. Jason and Crystalina joined Brian Butler to write the Theology of the Body for Teens textbook we use for class, so I continued to refresh the page until the "Add to Cart" icon appeared.

When the beautiful book arrived, I dived in and hardly came up for air. The Everts broke up five years of first hand female accounts, advice, and reasoning into twenty-one short chapters outlining the importance of chastity.

Chastity: this is not your mother's "abstinence" talk. This book peels away the layers of justification, insecurities, excuses, and settling that all women use and face. The Everts compiled a book that walks through the mindset of a woman, trekking through her darkest thoughts on the subjects of romantic love and self-love.

Right off the bat, reading the title of the first chapter, "Missionary Dating," made it clear this was not going to be a softball read.

The chapter followed the air of the Bright Maidens' posts about dating, picking out and detailing ten "types" of guys to avoid dating. Among the no-nos were "The Control Freak," "The Smooth Criminal," and "The Fixer-Upper/Problem Child."

It's so easy to let the camouflage cover those red flags when we get attention we've been craving from a guy. This list helps us see A) if we might be settling and B) why it's not worth it to eat from the dumpster instead of waiting for the banquet.

Jason actually uses this dumpster metaphor in a more elaborate description of how this world convinces us to "just do it" and dive in now without consideration for our decisions' consequences. Later chapters like "Grow a Backbone," "Hang Up on Hookups" and "Wear Something Revealing -- Be Modest," weave this concept into the importance of valuing oneself.

Women are not often convinced of their value, at least not until they change X, Y, and Z.

Mirror, mirror on the wall

"Once I'm thinner, it will be easier to be comfortable around people."
"When I clear up my skin, I won't be as embarrassed to draw attention to myself."
"If I could just be a better singer, I know guys would like me."

The Everts spend the entire book attempting to realign the damage done by these mindsets. Each chapter builds upon the other, teaching lessons of love, value, and constructing a relationship with God.

All the junk filling our minds separates us from the One who created us. Raking out the junk isn't going to happen in the time it takes to read 300 pages, but reading the tough questions and hard pressing examinations in those pages aims to make us ask: Am I getting all that I can out of my life? Am I free?

Jason and Crystalina gave women the authentic version of Feminine Mystique we've been missing. Near the end of the book, they quote Dawn Eden, author of The Thrill of the Chaste and a woman I had the distinct pleasure of meeting. She wrote:

"A woman with the courage to step out into the unknown, risking temporary loneliness for a shot at lasting joy, is more than a "single." She's singular. Instead of defining herself by what she lacks--a relationship with a man--she defines herself by what she has: a relationship with God." (Eden, 22)

"Abstinence" really means nothing if we don't balance our choices with reasoning. It is too easy to fall when we're standing on a pile of sand. Choose to stand on a rock.

As the Venerable John Paul II once said to an audience of students at Eurasia University in 2001, "Be courageous, fear nothing, and you will not be disappointed."

Consider buying a box of 44 books. Don't faint, the publishers are selling this book individually for about $25 or by the case of paperbacks for $2 per book. The $88 box of books could be a fabulous evangelism tool for any girls, young ladies, or women in your life. I know I will find more than 44 girls who need to learn to love themselves, some for the first time.

Lessons in Love

I learned the most important lesson from this book: In a partner, you should find someone who brings you closer to God and strengthens that relationship, not push you away and weaken it. Nowadays, it's hard to find a decent person who has good values, but this book gives you hope. It lets you know that you are not alone feeling like this, and the right person is out there. You just have to have faith.

This book is written to anyone who is single, and to people like me, who are in a relationship, but just need some guidance to know they are on the right path. If I had a teenage daughter, I'd give her this book to read, because it reinforces the moral idea of staying pure and waiting for the right man. If I had a son, I'd want him to read it, because it would teach him how to treat a gal! We definitely need more gents in this world!

Great book! If you are looking at it--don't hesitate--BUY! You will be very happy you did.

Great book worth reading by every woman!!

In this book I've found relief and comfort, also the strength to truly believe in what I think is best for me and my future. I learned that love comes naturally, and that I will know exactly when I find the person that God has prepared for me, in every sense. Relationships are not made for solving personal problems, both need to be complete in order to share and still grow learning from each other. I feel now more confident, and I am more willing to let everything in God's hands. Thanks to catholicmatch.com for the advise of getting this book!

Clearly an homage to the man to whom “virtually every academically affiliated surgeon can trace his or her teachers,” teaching surgeon Imber’s effort is more than a biography. It is a scholarly reconstruction, complete with historical perspective, of the life of a man who managed to revolutionize surgical practices and, indeed, the entire field of surgery, while battling the enduring and debilitating consequences of self-inflicted medical experimentation. To make surgery more efficient for surgeons, safer, and freer of pain for patients, Halsted began to explore various methods of anesthesia, including the then recently discovered drug, cocaine. He became addicted. Failure to kick that addiction played havoc with his professional life and ultimately forced him to turn optimistically to heroin, generally thought at the time to be an effective treatment. The result was lifelong heroin dependence, despite which he was eventually able to not only function but also continue a brilliant career. About the Author
Dr. Gerald Imber is a well known plastic surgeon and authority on cosmetic surgery, and directs a private clinic in Manhattan. An early proponent of prevention and minimally invasive procedures, he has devised many popular anti-aging techniques, and is attending surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital and assistant clinical professor of surgery at Weill-Cornell School of Medicine.

Dr. Imber has published many scientific papers and is a regular lecturer at professional meetings. He is also the author of a number of “beauty books” and has written on many subjects for varied publications such as Departures, and The Wall Street Journal, and appears regularly on network television.

A heroic historical page-turner

Dr. Gerald Imber will change your views of what it means to be a doctor and a patient, to be sick and to be well. While tracing the convoluted evolution of modern surgery, Imber also chronicles the prodigious, twisted career of the greatest surgeon in American history. As he modernized medicine - introducing such life-sparing novelties as anesthesia, scrubsuits, handwashing, sterlized instruments, even while the medical establishment strenuously resisted his innovations -- Halsted himself descended into a dark, secretive abyss of cocaine abuse and closeted homosexuality. Yet Halsted's techniques and his teaching were so unimpeachably sound, they remain the model for practicing and teaching surgery today. Halsted's story is written with such clarity, it will appeal universally - along the way, Imber's tale encompasses, among other matters, 19th-century American and European history, and some commendably high and lamentably low examples of the human condition. It is a wonder Halsted never had a biography before; we should be very grateful that Dr. Gerald Imber took on this daunting task. His impressive scholarship never gets in the way of good story telling. The charm, humor, and authority of the author's voice shines warmly throughout the sprawling narrative.

Strangely fascinating

By far the best biography I have read. I did not have to skip over any boring parts or risk falling asleep. It was strange to realize that not only did people not always use sterile practices but that within the last 100 years people did not use sterile practices. Dr Halsted snd his peers were the creators of modern medicine as we still know it, and their story is a fascinating one.

Fascinating look into how modern surgery developed

"Genius on the Edge" is an interesting book describing the medical developments (especially in surgery) during the period of about 1846 to 1922. The first third of the book mainly focused on what surgery was like before this period, on the developments that occurred from 1846 to 1889, and how they affected Halsted's medical training and prompted his surgical innovations. The rest of the book was more a series of short biographies of men who worked with Halsted and the developments they (and he) brought to the practice of surgery from 1889-1922. It also covered Halsted's marriage and how he lived.

The author didn't assume that the reader was familiar with medical terms and so concisely worked that information in as was needed to understand the innovations. He did an excellent job of making the topic fascinating and easy to understand. I found the book a quick read despite the amount of information packed into it. I also liked how the author wove the general technological changes and social setting into the story so we could see how society effected the advances and how Halsted and the others influenced society in turn. While the book mostly focused on American surgery (especially that done at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine), the author also brought up related advances over in Europe.

There were only a couple of brief descriptions of actual surgery, so most of the book probably wouldn't bother those who get queasy by descriptions of operations.

Some of the topics covered were: the introduction of general anesthetics, heat sterilization, and antiseptics to make surgery safer. Overall, I'd highly recommend this well-written and interesting book to those interested in how medicine (especially surgery) has developed into what we take for granted today.

Great book

Maybe I am Biased because ""the modern blacksmith" was the first book I read on blacksmithing almost 20 years ago. But I really liked it and I think there are things in this book that you can't learn anywhere else. I have or have read ALL of the popular books on blacksmithing and this is still one of my favorites, certainly my favorite beginner-intermediate one. It really stands out from the crowd of generic beginner books.

To set the record straight, this takes "the modern blacksmith" and adds a couple few small books to it, content about making scissors (not as easy as you would think), woodworking tools, amateur machining, and little giant power hammers. This book is profusely illustrated, great for the visual learner. I found the illustrations to be clear to follow and aesthetically pleasing. Especially when you consider that the author/illustrator was practically blind, it is kind of amazing.

If your into salvaging things from the scrap yard, this is for you, I think the world could use a little more Red Greening up anyways.

Intellectual fodder for a M/F reader; Perhaps excellent for Femdom fans

There is no "Star" ranking for I learned a lot from a book, nor for 'it pushed my boundaries'. I've given it five stars for those two reasons. If I hadn't been asked to review it prior to publication, I never would have downloaded it, and if I did, I wouldn't have made it past the first couple of pages. Here's why, and why I gave it 5 stars:

I'm a M/F oriented reader. While I intellectually get that some men and women enjoy Femdom relationships, from sex only to 24/7 TPE (total power exchange), I wouldn't want to be in such a relationship. I can read about serious pain inflicted on a sub (f) without freaking out, as long as it has a point in the story, the story is well written and free of errors, and I care about one or more of the characters or learn something. Is it logical that, up to now, I've freaked out about serious pain inflicted on a sub (m)? No and yes. It freaks me out because it is much easier to imagine that it is my cock, my balls, my need to come, my humiliation, if the recipient is male. No, because I believe that men and women should have the same opportunities as each other, limited only by biological processes and not cultural ones.

Slave to Surrender is a well written short story, focusing on the erotic part of this wife and husband's 24/7 femdom relationship. It mentioned what restrictions and play they'd found and focuses on how the M wants to submit more to his wife.

I give it five stars because it made me think, rather than dwell in imaginary or real emotions.

The Title Says it All

Monica and Matthew are a successful married couple who enjoy a loving d/s relationship in private. Matthew enjoys his submissive role and wants to expand it, but is afraid of how it will affect other aspects of his life like work and their vanilla friends. I am typically attracted to male domination/female submission erotica but this book caught my eye, and once I began reading I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is well written with interesting dialogue. I particularly enjoyed the author's depiction of the the d/s relationship in the context of a loving wife and husband. The story is not too tame, nor is it too extreme, and the sex is hot and varied. The element of hypnotism also allowed the author to explore some very interesting possibilities. A very good read!

I usually don't go for femdom stories, they just really aren't my thing, but I couldn't help wanting to read this knowing that there were elements of erotic hypnosis. I've heard of this but have never read anything with that in it so I was very curious.

I ended up really enjoying this story! The lengths that Matthew goes to in order to please his Mistress is so sweet and commendable. I really enjoyed the entire erotic hypnosis thing and found it very interesting to hear Matt's inner thoughts of how he is feeling as his Mistress takes him deeper and deeper under her command. I also thoroughly enjoyed the party they go to so that she can show off his new found "skills". I thought it was very well done, extremely erotic, and unlike anything else I've read before. I originally gave this 3 stars just due to it not being my normal kind of erotica story, but that really seemed unfair as I was typing up this review. The story and writing are well done and kept me interested and entertained. I would recommend this author and would also recommend this read to anyone who enjoys femdom stories.

Take, for example, the purchasing environment. Today, e-commerce has enabled hospitality organizations to purchase needed items from a vendor or supplier over the Internet. Other examples include the systems and applications used in a restaurant or catering environment. No longer is a stand-alone cash register or paper seating chart enough. Now, enterprise, meaning companywide, systems have been put in place to take advantage of data collection and collaboration across different locations. On the lodging side, properties are now managed by entire systems that track the status and charges of specific spaces and allocate costs and supplies accordingly, all the while interfacing with the outside world. The use of the Internet plays a large role in Technology Strategies for the Hospitality Industry.

This text is a collaboration among three academics and one industry professional who keeps us honest. Further, the "living" world of hospitality technology is incorporated via interviews at the beginning of each chapter with leaders in our industry. They include Bill Fisher, the former president of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA) and now Eminent Scholar at the Rosen School of Hospitality Management at Florida International University and Bob Bennett, one of the few members in the Hospitality Technology Hall of Fame, currently senior vice president—property systems and services for Pegasus Solutions. Through these interviews, we take a look at hospitality technology from two main vantage points. From Microsoft to Micros, we first seek to understand Technology Strategies for the Hospitality Industry from a vendor's perspective. Second, we look at it from the view of those who purchase and use these systems and applications every day in hospitality, be they a general manager or a director of technology for a specific property. Through these two views, the reader is able to fully capture the function and use of technology in the hospitality industry.

Regardless of the "dot.com" crash, the drive and execution of innovative ideas play a vital part in our industry and are presented throughout the book. From the ability to make a restaurant reservation over the Internet from companies such as Open Table Inc. to new phone systems using the same medium such as bConvergent Inc., new technologies are giving both managers and customers more capability.

After the opening interview, the subject matter is detailed in the chapter itself, with a case study and learning activity at the end. After reading the chapter, we recommend that you reread the interview with your newly gained knowledge.

The text opens with a foreward written by Richard G. Moore, Professor Emeritus at Cornell University. The eleven-chapter text itself is divided into two parts. Chapters 1 through 4 form Part I and constitute fundamentals of knowledge and usage. Chapters 5 through 11 make up Part 11 and look at specific software and systems in hospitality.

The first chapter welcomes you to the world of hospitality information technology, and Chapter 2 shows how we can use it for competitive advantage. These two chapters set the tone for the rest of the book, while presenting to the reader what career and business opportunities are available through technology understanding and usage. These points are reinforced throughout the book and serve as its major themes. Rounding out the fundamentals section are Chapters 3 and 4 with a description of computing essentials and networks, requisite knowledge for the next section.

Chapter 5 begins Part II with a detailed discussion of e-commerce and the way in which the Internet has changed the way we do business. Chapters 6 and 7 detail operational-specific applications for both the food and beverage and lodging sides. Chapter 8 is our most detailed chapter and is a thorough analysis of the global distribution system, where and through which much of our customer data originates and travels. Chapters 9 and 10 round out the text with a discussion of databases and customer relationship management (Chapter 9) and the efficient usage of information through such systems as executive information systems (Chapter 10). Today's front line managers often purchase technology directly, just as they would food or uniforms. They are expected to shop competitively, apply it to their department, and provide a return on investment (ROI). For this reason, we end the book with the investment and implementation chapter (Chapter 11).

Appendices

The appendices of the book contain further detailed analysis on four important themes. The first appendix expands on the case study from Chapter 3, it is the HITIS initiative from the AH&LA for hospitality information technology industry standards. This organization is concerned with the interoperability of technology used in our industry.

The second appendix comes from an established professional, Cindy Estis Green, and is a more detailed analysis of revenue and yield management from Chapter 7 and customer relationship management (CRM) from Chapter 9.

The third appendix offers more detail on the global distribution system from Chapter 8.

The fourth appendix contains a sample request for proposal (RFP) from Chapter 11, providing a working example of the content presented in the chapter.

Hospitality Technology Through a Firehose

This is an excellent beginner's guide to hospitality technology. It is a "Reader's Digest-on-Adkins-Diet" treatment but the authors hit some high points and de-mystify much of the jargon without bogging the reader down in too much information.
Each chapter begins with an interview of an industry luminary. While a tad superfluous, the interviews are a light-weight introduction of each topic, a reinforcement of the vocational pragmatism of the text and an attempt to humanize the subject matter.
The first two chapters are preachy but a good discussion of what IT (information technology) means in the context of hospitality and why one should care. For those just beginning their careers, or those who might have forgotten why we do what we do, they are worthwhile reading.
The balance of the book is a compendium of the major application sets specific to the industry - CRS, PMS, POS, CRM, MIS, EIS - and just in time to prevent TLA overload, includes segments on e-commerce (defined mostly as Internet purchasing methods) and a primer on how to specify, evaluate and acquire technology.
The authors are faithful throughout to the theme of technology for the sake of the business and emphasize strategic considerations at each turn. They reasonably stop short of defining or recommending specific business strategies, instead stressing the importance of aligning technology with the strategies of the organization as a whole.
Recommended reading for newbie's or baffled veterans trying to get their arms around IT hospitality concepts and issues.

A good and broad introduction to the technologies used today in the hospitality industry

This is an interesting and basic book for those planning to work in the hospitality industry to become familiarized with the technology issues and information systems they are likely to encounter in their jobs. The book isn't on the sharpest cutting edge of technology, but in an introductory book like this, that matters much less. It is the broad subjects of each chapter that matter most.

The book is eleven chapters in two parts. The first part consists of four chapters on computing basics. They discuss IT based careers in Hospitality, using IT for competitive advantage, computing essentials, and networks & security.

The second part has chapters on e-commerce, restaurant management systems, property management systems & interfaces, hotel global distribution systems, databases, the power of information, and strategic hospitality technology investment.

One interesting feature is that each chapter begins with a short interview with an authority in the field of the topic the chapter discusses followed by a short introduction.

The authors do a fine job of keeping the techo-speak to a very minimum because this book is focused for hospitality industry people rather than computer jocks. However, it is about IT matters rather than sunblock and chlorination levels for the hotel pool. So, with that little caveat, have fun!

Dated and wrong

If i were the editor or publisher of this book i would be embarrassed. Sadly, it appears the second edition of this 2001-era book was created by liberally sprinkling 2010 buzzwords (like "android") without updating the content.

two examples:
(1) the text expands the acronym USB as "United Serial Bus". How that got past the technical reviewers and the editors (much less the authors) escapes me.
(2) the text states that very few hotel patrons have smartphones.

If this text wasn't required reading for my class i would have immediately returned it. I shudder to think that the instructor will take the text's contents as gospel.
