A very decent primer on American Political Parties

Balanced, fact based and informative. The author covers a dry topic with insight and engaging descriptions of the formation of the political system in America.
I recommend this well written book to anyone with an interest in how the history of American politics has and continues to influence the current political landscape.

Excellent summary of US political parties

I was looking for a book which explained, at a high level, the history and ideologies of political parties during the 19th century and this book delivered. In my studies of the Civil War and events leading up to the war, I wanted to understand the Whigs, Free-Soil and other parties and this book painted a clear and understandable picture of these and many other parties.

Excellent book! The author takes you through the changing landscape of our political system. He shows you the ebb and flow of changing philosophies and how they changed or party system. You get the feeling of deja vu with current election cycle. If you really have an interest in our political system, you will enjoy this synopsis.
