Not Recommended

Would not recommend this read to others. It is just too filled with graphics and pictures. The author probably knows what he is trying to express but is unable to convey that in this publication. I was looking for a way to put concepts to work and I did not find it here. Not my recommendation for a read or application.

makes perfect sense

Interestingly, back in the old days of strength training, this was an incorporated method of exercise. Somehow along the way it became normal to do full reps. In my experience holding a weight dormant while the muscle is contracted fatiques the muscle much faster than the traditional "pump". I have been doing traditional full-rep weight lifting for years, and when I switched to static training I saw an immediate surge in strength. People in the gym will look at you like you don't know what you're doing but in my opinion they are wasting their time. I do agree with some of the reviews of the pictured exercises listed. It simply does not show enough. Try doing traditional chin-ups this way, or even traditional push-ups. How about dips? After several second your arms will begin to tremble. It works wonders. One of the keys is to remember to take plenty of time off between workouts until you feel fully recovered. Good luck.

Interesting Book But...

This book is fairy dubious. To document the gains made by trainees, it lists average increases, but no mean values or standard deviation for these results! That makes it meaningless for readers who have even a cursory knowledge of statistics and research methodology.
The cover and photos in the book are standard for a bodybuilding work-minimal relevance to the contents, but that's the responsibility of the publisher, not the author.
The authors ignore neural efficiency in muscle recruitment and the function of proprioceptivity in athletic skills. Of course, if all the reader wants is to have musculature for the sake of appearance, the book may be of value.
There are a number of pieces of equipment on the market that allow one to exercise per a Static Contraction protocol. One is the power rack, originally designed for isometric and short range of motion work. Another would be a Health Lift machine, which was manufactured in the 1870's and available in a modern incarnation from Piedmont Design Associates.

Yet, scarcely had she completed her maiden voyage, than war broke out, and she found herself requisitioned by the Australian government as a troop transport, returning to her original role as a passenger carrying merchant ship during the inter-war years, the heyday of ocean transport. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the SS Ceramic stayed on her regular route, but again found herself transporting troops between continents, as well as civilian passengers; a dual role that was considered a 'calculated risk' at the time. Detached from Atlantic Convoy ON149 in December 1942, the SS Ceramic had not prgressed far before she was torpedoed and sunk west of the Azores by U-515. 20-year old Eric Munday, a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, was the only survivor - picked up by the U-boat which returned later to a scene of devastation following overnight storms which had wiped out the lifeboats and claimed 655 lives, women and children among them. One of the casualties was the author's grandfather, Trevor Winser. This book is the result of the author's investigation into the circumstances of that night, and the ship that shared his fate. For the first time, Eric Munday tells his story in full, and the surviving crew of U-515 give their own accounts of the sinking of the Ceramic, ranked the 23rd worst wartime shipping disaster of any nation or period. After more than 60 years, the story of the SS Ceramic is finally told.

A thoroughly researched true story - suspense and tragedy

The builders of the Titanic were determined to create a new model -- safer and blind to the prejudice of class. This ship travelled the seas worthy of its makers weathering the storms of time and the demands of wartime commissions through WW1 and lastly, the incredibly treacherous work as a merchant ship in WW2. The Ceramic's demise was all the more tragic because of it's wartime cargo -- innocent civilians including women and children. All the more reason for the cover- up that followed but was eventually revealed with the release of the one and only survivor captured be the Germans in stormy seas.

SS Ceramic book disappoints.

Far too much technical detail concerning origin and construction of the ship itself, and too much personal detail about the sole survivor. His personal letters from the POW camp have no bearing of the Ceramic and seem to have been included to provide "bulk".The actual sinking and the circumstances of the sinking received only short accounts. It would have been interesting to learn more of the identity of passengers and crew
I admit to prejudice, as my cousin was a surgeon on his way to set up an orthopaedic reseach unit in S Africa yet neither he or any of the QA nurses on board are even mentioned.

About the Author

Alan Harding is Professor of Public Policy and Director of the Heseltine Institute for Public Policy and Practice at the University of Liverpool Management School in the UK. Previously, he held posts at Manchester, Salford and Liverpool John Moores universities. His research interests are in urban and regional development, governance and policy and he has acted as an advisor on these issues for a wide range of leading agencies with interests in this field.

Talja Blokland (1971) is an urban sociologist who has worked at Yale University, the University of Manchester and various Dutch universities. Since 2009, she has held the chair of Urban and Regional Sociology at Humboldt University in Berlin. Her publications include Urban Bonds (Polity 2003), Networked Urbanism (edited with Mike Savage, Ashgate 2008) and various articles on race and ethnicity in the city, poor neighbourhoods, urban violence, gentrification, urban middle classes and neighbourhood relations and everyday interactions.

About the Author

Wendy Dunn is the James Y. Canfield Professor of Psychology at Coe College. Wendy majored in biology and psychology at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she also worked at the National Animal Disease Laboratory. She earned a master’s degree, also at Iowa State, in experimental psychology. Taking a break from education, she next worked at a nationally-known marketing research firm, but ultimately decided that teaching undergraduates was her true passion. She subsequently earned two doctoral degrees from the University of Iowa, one in educational psychology and, supported by Coe College, a second in management and organizations. Wendy’s diverse career interests have led her, at various times, to serve in administrative, as well as teaching roles at Coe. She worked for a time as Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, and she currently holds a joint appointment as Professor and Director of Institutional Research and Planning at Coe. Although Wendy has published her research in major journals and is an author of three texts in the field of psychology, her true love is teaching, and it is this activity that gives her the most pleasure. Students consistently comment on Wendy’s ability to inspire their curiosity about human nature, and they have honored her by electing her to receive the colleges’ highest teaching recognition – the C. J. Lynch award for outstanding teaching. Wendy has been married to Greg for 37 years, and together they have raised two children – as such, like all of us, her interest in human development is personal as well as professional.

Grace Craig is Professor Emerita at the University of Massachusetts, at Amherst. Currently, she is semi-retired from the Child, Family and Schools program, teaching specialty seminars intermittently. Grace completed her B.A. in Sociology, with honors in Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, and her MS and PhD there in Child and Educational Psychology with minors in Clinical Psychology and in Research methods. She took time out for 2 years along the way to practice School Psychology in western Massachusetts She began her academic career as a Lecturer, for 4 years, in the Psychology Department at Smith College, in the late 1960s, -- a time of reassessment in the social sciences and in the society at large. Grace has been married to Ralph Craig for 53 years and together they have one daughter and one grandson.

In regards to the auction: Item exactly as described, Fast Shipping, Overall Happy with transaction!! I would recommend.
In regards to the book: This book has been so much better than the required reading for Psychology 150 (101 for some), This book is user friendly. The language is easy to understand, the information is well organized, the end of chapter tests & summaries are also very helpful. My only complaint with this book which I suppose has more to do with the publisher is the inability to use the "My Psych Lab" tool. I feel that I spent extra money for this copy of the book because I wanted to be able to use the "My Psych Lab" tool and I am not able to do so. I feel like I spent more money than was necessary and these books are so very expensive to begin with so BUYER BEWARE!!! If you can ask your instructor ahead of time about the "My Psych Lab" tool I would because if I were able to go back & purchase this book again I certainly would not spend the extra money for this particular copy.
