I bought this book a few years ago on the strength of a few very high reviews, and I'm glad I did. I find myself re-reading an interview or two a few times a year. It's a book that's great for picking up and reading for a short while because it's arranged as a series of unconnected interviews with several millionaires. Then you can put it down again without feeling like you'll lose the thread of the book.

The interviewees provide a lot of inspiration, perspective, and a few really good actionable ideas about becoming the kind of person who becomes a millionaire.

FYI: I am unconnected to the authors and have not been asked (or bribed) to provide this review in any way. I just think it's a good book that I've gotten a lot of use from in the past few years.

A really good book by Mike Litman and Jason Osman, this book is more to do with how to become the type of person that would be a millionaire rather than being a millionaire yourself. It is about self development with a view to everything else following. Many good interviews on leading entrepeneurs. This is the type of instruction that may make you a millionaire or a succeeder in life even if you don't.

Almaguer comparatively assesses the struggles for control of resources, status, and political legitimacy between the European American and the Native American, Mexican, African-American, Chinese, and Japanese populations. Drawing from an array of primary and secondary sources, he weaves a detailed, disturbing portrait of ethnic, racial, and class relationships during this tumultuous time.

The U.S. annexation of California in 1848 and the simultaneous discovery of gold sparked rapid and diverse waves of immigration westward, displacing the already established pastoral Mexican society. Almaguer shows how the confrontation between white immigrants and the Mexican ranchero and working class populations was also a contestation over racial status in which racialization influenced and was in turn influenced by class position in the changing economic order. Partly because of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which granted U.S. citizenship and other rights, parts of the Mexican population were integrated into the emerging Anglo society more easily than other racialized groups. A case study of Ventura County highlights declining political and economic fortunes of the Mexican elite while showing how Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, and Indian populations were permanently relegated to the bottom of the class structure as unskilled manual workers.

The fate of the Native American population provides perhaps the most extreme example of white supremacy during the period. Popular conceptions of Native Americans as "uncivilized and "heathen," justified the killing of more than 8,000 men, women, and children between 1848 and 1870. Many survivors were incorporated at the periphery of Anglo society, often as indentured laborers and virtual slaves.

Underpinning the institutional structuring of white supremacy were notions such as "manifest destiny," the inherent good of the capitalist wage-system, and the superiority of Christianity and Euro-American culture, all of which helped to marginalize non white groups in California and justify Anglo-American class dominance. As other racialized groups assumed new roles, Almaguer assesses the complex interplay between economic forces and racial attitudes that simultaneously structured and allocated "group position" in the new social hierarchy.

California remains a contested racial frontier, as political struggles over the rights and opportunities of different groups continue to reverberate along racial lines. Racial Fault Lines is an invaluable contribution to our understanding of ethnicity and class in America, and the social construction of "race" in the Far West.

Important work in California history.

I realized that racism influenced the history of our state, but Almaguer does a brilliant job at revealing the degree to which this sad statement is true. This is an importnat book for anyone who lives in California, especially for those involved in governemnt, business, or public education. Racism has had a real effect on our state and people of color, and it contineus to today. The knowledge contained in this book can help us move away from our mistakes and better understand how public action and government policies can change things, for better or worse.

almost faultless

Almaguer has given us a useful history of racial attitudes and white supremacy in nineteenth century Cali. Avoiding a "binary"-- or black/white-- understanding of racial relations, Racial Fault Lines traces the unique racial sagas of Mexicans, Chinese, and Indian peoples in their encounters with "white" Californians. Almaguer could do more to investigate interactions among such groups ACROSS the categories of "racial otherness": Mexican, Chinese, and Indian. SOme readers will also question his chronology and wonder to what extent the 'origins of white supremacy' in California might have begun much earlier than the mid-nineteenth century, where his book focuses.

You will be amazed by the facts devulged in this book and even compare to present california laws which are still in effect in regards to people of color. Its incredible what people in power will do to keep their power and the effect it has on the people who helped build the state of California. Excellent book and a must have for all, especially Californian's.

WILD CARDS Authors Use it

A marvelously readable compendium of all things WILD CARD! An original WILD CARDS mafioso and major contributor to the shared-world anthology and novel series, John Jos. Miller is uniquely qualified to write the definitive reference.

And he has.

I've never played the game MUTANTS & MASTERMINDS, so I can't comment on the book's game-specific aspects. The book itself is a high-quality product. It's also beautifully illustrated, with some illustrations being taken from the books themselves and others done originally for this Campaign Setting. It's definitely easy on the eyes.

Whether you're a gamer or a reader, if you want to know about WILD CARDS - universe, places, events, and most of all the characters - this is the place. We writers of the series use this book as our encyclopedia (and wish we had something like it long ago): it's WILD CARDS canon.

Full Disclosure: I'm a long-time friend of John Miller and his wife Gail Gershner-Miller (another WILD CARDS contributor.) Feel free to discount my opinions on that basis.

Green Ronin has created a terrific supplement with this WILD CARDS sourcebook by John J. Miller. Miller--one of the series' original and ongoing writers--has brought the complex, fascinating world of the Wild Cards (survivors of an alien virus that kills 90% of infectees and gives the rest superhuman talents from the godlike to the riduculous) into the Mutants & Masterminds game.

The book is divided up about as you'd expect, with the first segment a thorough history of Wild Cards Earth, followed by a compendium of major characters, with the closing section a discourse on how to build roleplaying adventures in the Wild Cards setting.

Miller has done a topnotch job of making the world easy to grasp and game. Roleplayers eager to find (or rediscover) this terrific sf world should buy this book.Wild Cards: A Mutants & Masterminds Campaign Setting

This is a campaign book made by Green Ronin Publishing using the M&M Game system for George RR Martin's Wildcards book series. The books covered are Wild Cards Volumes 1(Published January 1987) through Volume 17(Published January 2006). Which covers the timeline in the Wild Cards Universe of August 12, 1946 through August 2003. This 256 page hardcover covers a lot of material; that an M&M Gamemaster can present to his/her players. So if you are so inclined, one can mix and match from the M&M cannon books and Wild Cards cannon books; like a match up between DC & Marvel Supers.

Beyond the Frontiers - A genetic approach to the Brand

As the Chief Technical Officer of a Texas based e-services and print communication firm, I live in this interactive brandspace on a daily basis. The problem with this brave new world of pixels is simply that much is said and much is written but little intelligent communication occurs. I find the innovative and far reaching approach taken by Michael Moon to be the de facto foundation for the next "big thing".
The approach that one must take to these new media spaces and channels is not readily discernible from the clearly defined trails blazed in the more traditional areas of branding. This new territory is as different as the Earth is from the Moon [no pun intended]. The book travels beyond the areas marked as "unknown - there be dragons here" and opens a clear and understandable path into formerly mysterious areas.
What we need out here in the field is less hype and more substance. Firebrands is a rational, ground breaking treatise on the evolution of Branding. This is a pivotal work that serves as a wonderful deskside companion, as indispensible to me as my spell checker or my browser.
Michaels' best practices mental evolution from the time of the Jeff Martin led Digital Brand Building Seminars of the mid-90's to this opus show an extraordinary depth and breadth of thought and research . The Firebrands book is the Gray's Anatomy of Brand "science".
As my company moves forward with ground breaking, market defining services in the area of brand guaranty we will continue to consult the Firebrands roadmap. We anxiously await any follow-up materials that might come from this mind trust.
Be warned - this is not a shallow pop-business, executive book of the hour read. This is a genetic level approach to a new mindset. It must be read slowly, deliberately, and with a totally open mind. The graphics are not simply illustrative they are literally a book unto themselves. Read this brandspace atlas one chapter at a time, review the graphics, and with time and reflection you will understand.

Setting your brand on fire.

There are so many books on the market that discuss the concept of 'brand' from so many different points of view, that it's difficult to sort out the good from the bad. This is one of the good ones.
Moon and Millison define the basic concepts around brand. They explain in clear buzzword-light language what influences the growth and positioning of a brand. Finally, they provide ample and well-explained pointers to further reading to help understand some of their basic ideas more clearly.
As a consultant working for a systems integrator, one of the things that impressed me the most was the focus on execution. Many books about branding seem to imply that the technical details are irrelevant to brand success, but _Firebrands_ makes the point that a relationship with a customer only has brand value when supported by appropriate policies, training, and technical infrastructure. This is a message that can't be, IMO, repeated often enough.
Well worth the time to read.
